  1. Environment & Human Health

  2. Introduction of Topic • Our topic is the environment and human health.  • Many problems in the environment can affect the health of a human being.  • In some ways, the environment can help the health of someone, but in other ways, the environment can hurt the health of someone.  • While living on Earth, we can both help and hurt it. •  As humans, we live on Earth and take some things for granted.  • The environment can affect us and our health, depending on how we treat it.

  3. Current Outlook • Health is at risk  • emerging infectious diseases • diseases from animal to human (ex. bird flu) • environmental contamination • drinking water  • air pollution • car exhaust  • smelting and coal combustion by products • debris from disasters • change in climate • Global Warming

  4. Climate Change: increased asthma and other respiratory illnesses heat exhaustion and heat stroke deaths from extreme weather (tornadoes, hurricanes, floods) Air Pollution: can contribute to heart disease increase of having heart attack production of blood clots can increase airborne particles contaminate the water Current Outlook (continued)

  5. Plants Effect on Humans • Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac all produce an oil called urushiol. • When the oil gets on your skin it reacts and you are exposed to a itchy red rash with bumps or blisters. • 80% - 90% of adults will break into a rash when exposed to 50 micrograms of urushiol. • These rashes can due more then just cause major scaring someones body, it can also affect their lungs. •  In some cases adults are out of work for months or years due to problems.

  6. Issue Development • These public health threats are affected by the relationship between people and the physical chemical, and biological nature of our natural environments.  •  Public health problems are caused by environmental contamination and infectious diseases are growing worldwide.  • Environmental health problems vary from region to region, reflecting geography, climate, and a country's level of economic choices.   • Many health problems are associated with poverty and lack of resources such as clean water, food, shelter, fuel, and air.

  7. Physical Hazards • Important issues with physical hazards include the health effects of electromagnetic radiation and ionising radiation.  • Exposure to ultraviolet radiation carries an increased risk of skin cancer such as melanoma.  • Some pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons, in aerosol propellants or in the manufacture of certain plastics can damage the ozone layer and allow more UV light to harm us directly.

  8. Chemical Hazards • One includes tobacco smoke, it is a chemical risk to health. • Some pollutants of particular concern are airborne substances such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone and carbon monoxide.  • Indoor pollutants such has smoke and soot from the burning of wood appear to have a greater risk to human health.
