  2. Rutherford Hayes 1877-1881 • Republican • Investigated Nation’s custom houses – corrupt • This upset NY Boss Roscoe Conkling • And Republican followers the “Stalwarts”

  3. James Garfield 1881 - 8 months • Republican • Gave most government jobs to Republicans who wanted reform • His VP Chester Arthur had the support of the Stalwarts who did not want reform • Garfield was shot and he died 2 months later

  4. Chester Arthur 1881-1885 • Republican • To the shock of his Stalwarts he decided to work for reform!! • Passed the Pendleton Act 1883 • had to take a test to get a government job!!!! • Why did he go against his supporters? • He did this because he knew he was dying of kidney disease!

  5. Grover Cleveland 1885-9 & 1893-1897 • DEMOCRAT – first in 24 years • Erie County Sheriff • Mayor of Buffalo • Struggled against Congress and Big Business to lower tariffs

  6. Benjamin Harrison 1889-1893 • Republican • Lost majority of popular vote and won the electoral college vote

  7. William McKinley 1897 - 1901 • Republican • Shot in Buffalo NY at the Pan American Exposition • Passed the highest tariffs in US history! • Shot and dies 8 days later • His VP takes over as President!!! • TR….
