  1. In ONE minute, how many signs/ symbols can you remember ? Which symbols represent something important (but which is hard to put into words) ? How would you feel if someone on the bus sat on the box of chocolates you were bringing to your granny? Lost your parents’ wedding ring ?Tore up your national flag? Misused the symbol of your religion ?

  2. To define a symbol • To match religious symbols with the Sacramental reality they represent • To evaluate the power of symbols

  3. Explain what “deep idea” the 3 symbols represent. In religion, when you use a symbol, you make that reality present in some way. 2. Think of 3 religious symbols used in Christianity, and what the reality is that they “make real”. Symbols Represent something real, a deep idea that might be hard to put into words.

The life of God’s son • The power and presence of God • cleansing from sin/new life • wellbeing and healing • The presence of God in Jesus and the Holy Spirit • The light of Christ • The Sacrifice of Christ • The Holiness of God • Strength of mind and spirit • gifts of the Holy Spirit Religious symbols represent aspects of God’s love. They make God’s love and presence real to us. Write out the definition of a religious symbol above. Group the symbols in the Sacraments that they are used in (baptism, confirmation, eucharist, reconciliation, anointing sick, holy order, marriage). Choose one symbol for each sacrament and draw your own version of it. Title it with the name of the Sacrament. Label the reality it makes real to us (the blue box) *How would you feel if someone destroyedone of these religious symbols?
