Predicates Every complete sentence has two parts: subject and predicate The subject is the who (or what) the sentence is about. The predicate tells what the subject does. Judy and her dog run on the beach every day. EXAMPLE: Who? What do they do? SUBJECT Judy and her dog PREDICATE

  2. Every complete sentence has two parts: subject and predicate • The subject is the who (or what) the sentence is about. • The predicate tells what the subject does.

  3. Judy and her dog run on the beach every day. EXAMPLE: • Who? • What do they do? SUBJECT Judy and her dog PREDICATE run on the beach everyday.

  4. To Find the PREDICATE: • Ask what does it do? • Find the verb (action or linking) • Draw a vertical line before the verb • The predicate is the rest of the sentence.

  5. Judy and her dog run on the beach every day. EXAMPLE: • Find the verb (action or linking) • Draw a vertical line before the verb • The predicateis the rest of the sentence.

  6. Let’s Practice! My little brother broke his finger. SUBJECT WHO? My little brother WHAT DID HE DO? PREDICATE broke his finger.

  7. Let’s Practice! His Uncle Bob asked for directions. SUBJECT WHO? His Uncle Bob WHAT DID HE DO? PREDICATE asked for directions.

  8. Let’s Practice! Our babysitter arrived late. SUBJECT WHO? Our babysitter WHAT DID SHE DO? PREDICATE arrived late.

  9. Let’s Practice! The children bought a candy bar. SUBJECT WHO? The children WHAT DID THEY DO? PREDICATE bought a candy bar.

  10. Let’s Practice! Seven monkeys played in the tree. SUBJECT WHO? Seven monkeys WHAT DID THEY DO? PREDICATE played in the tree.

  11. Let’s Practice! Jon, Sue and I ate dinner together. SUBJECT WHO? Jon, Sue and I WHAT DID WE DO? PREDICATE ate dinner together.

  12. Let’s Practice! Jon and Sue are getting married. SUBJECT WHO? Jon and Sue WHAT WILL THEY DO? PREDICATE are getting married.

  13. Let’s Practice! Tim and I will be in the wedding. SUBJECT WHO? Tim and I WHAT DID WE DO? PREDICATE will be in the wedding.
