  4. What equipment do you need in baseball? • Ball - A regulation-size baseball is 9 inches (23 cm) in circumference and weighs 5 1/4 ounces (149 grams). Within the stitched cowhide or horsehide exterior is a layer of yarn wound around a core of cork or rubber. • Bat - A wooden bat, often made from an ash tree, is at most 42 inches (107 cm) long. At its widest, the bat's barrel is 2.75 (7 cm) in diameter. • Glove - Depending on a player's position, a fielding glove's dimensions will vary. Generally, gloves are leather with a woven section to aid in catching the ball. • Helmet - These head coverings are worn to protect players from injury. • Cleats - Shoes with spikes all the way to the toes distinguish baseball cleats from those worn for other sports. • Batting glove - Not required, but most players wear them to prevent blisters from batting and friction burns from sliding into base. • Padding and mask - Catchers need extra padding and a face mask to protect themselves during play.
