  2. 1. Hardware • The visible, touchable parts of a computer system

  3. 2. Software • The invisible, electronically stored instructions that tell a computer what to do

  4. 3.ApplicationProgram • Another word for software.

  5. 4. Hard Drive • A storage disk made of rigid material which is usually not removable from the computer. It is a fixed disk.

  6. 5. USB Drive • A “key chain” drive (aka. USB, jump, or flash drive) is a plug-and-play portable storage device that uses flash memory and is lightweight enough to attach to a key chain.

  7. 6. CD-ROM Drive • An Optical Disk Storage system that uses optical disks that have already had information written on them.

  8. 7. DVD-ROM Drive • The player that replaces your computers CD-ROM. It plays regular CD-ROM discs as well as DVD-ROM discs. DVD holds 28 times more information than a CD-ROM.

  9. 8. Compact Disc (CD) • A small, portable, round medium used for electronically recording, storing and playing back audio, video, text, and other information in digital form.

  10. 9. Disk Drive • This was the most commonly used auxiliary storage device which stores data by magnetically recording it on the surface of a rotating disk.

  12. 11. Keyboard • A device that sends data to the processor each time a key is struck.

  13. 12. Mouse • An input device which when rolled about a surface sends signals to the computer and moves a cursor or other object on the screen.

  14. 13. Monitor • The most commonly used video display with a computer system.

  15. 14. Printer • An output device that produces output in printed form on paper.

  16. 15. Modem • A device used to connect a computer to a regular telephone line in order to have use of the Internet.

  17. 16. Scanner • A scanner is a device that captures images from photographic prints, posters, magazine pages, and similar sources for computer editing and display.

  18. 17. Digital Camera • A device that records and stores photographic images in digital form that can be fed to a computer as the impressions are recorded or stored in the device for later loading into a computer or printer.

  19. 18. Digital Projector (ex. EIKI) • Also called a digital projection display system, is a specialized computer display that projects an enlarged image on a movie screen. Such devices are commonly used in presentations.

  20. 19. Headphones • A method by which one student can hear sounds from the computer.

  21. 20. Speakers • The method by which a group/room of people can use to hear sounds from the computer.

  22. 21. Microphone • A means by which you can put vocal information into your computer.

  23. Types of 22. Peripheral • Any computer device that is not part of the essential computer but is situated relatively close by. A near synonym is input/output (I/O) devices.

  24. 23. Computer • Computer - An electronic device for storing and processing data according to instructions given to it.

  25. 24. Power-up • Power-up (or the synonym "power-on") is a verb meaning to apply electrical power to a device - that is, to "turn it on" as most of us would say about turning on a light switch when entering a dark room.

  26. 25. Storage Device • Storage Device- A piece of hardware whose main function is to store data/information.

  27. 26. Icon • Icon-pictogram displayed on a computer screen and used to navigate a computer system or mobile device.

  28. 27. Input Device • Input Device-an input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer.

  29. 28. Output Device • Output Device-Any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by a computer.

  30. 29. Touch Screen • Touch Screen-A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area.

  31. 30. Operating System • Operating System- The operating system (OS) is the first thing loaded onto the computer -- without the operating system, a computer is useless. • Most desktop or laptop PCs come pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows. Macintosh computers come pre-loaded with Mac OS X. Many corporate servers use the Linux or UNIX operating systems.
