Last years research, this years idea… Mental Health & Illness: • Social roles: ‘insanity role’, layman conception of mental illness; ‘patient role’, professional conception • What is the relationship of the layman to the patient role and the professional to the insanity role? • Findings: legitimacy of patient role criteria, neglect of insanity role criteria Old age in the West • Quality Care Commission Report in October 2011- unacceptable care of elderly in 55 out 100 NHS hospitals • Not merely due to staff shortages- attitudes • Does this reflect wider cultural shifts in views of the elderly? • What happens to symbolic capital in the ageing process as we approach ‘old age’? How is it experienced?
