  2. ¿Te acuerdas? • Some irregular verbs are “stem-changing” • Their STEM changes, along with their ending when conjugating • O-> UE Poder -puedo • E -> IE merendar – meriendo • Remember! Their stems do NOT change for “nosotros” or “vosotros” • Podemos/merendamos

  4. IR verbs: “E -> I” stem-change • Pedir and Servir are “e->I” stem-changing verbs. • Pedir means “to order” • The “nosotros” and “vosotros” stems DO NOT CHANGE

  7. Stem-changing verbs Preferir, poder, probar

  8. Preferir* (E->IE) • Preferir means “to prefer” • It is an “e -> ie” stem-changing verb. • The SECOND “E” changes to an “IE” • First person singular becomes prefiero • Remember, it is an “-ir” verb! • Draw a T-chart and try conjugating “Preferir”

  9. Practica con preferir… • I prefer to drink water. • Prefiero tomar/beber agua. • Juan prefers hamburgers. • Juan prefiere hamburguesas. • We prefer to sleep. • Nosotros preferimos dormir.

  10. Probar* and Poder* (o -> ue) • Probar and Poder are “o -> ue” stem-changing verbs • The “O” changes to a “UE” • Probar means to try or to taste • It is an “-ar” verb • Draw a T chart and fill out for “probar”

  11. Practica… • I try the cake. • Pruebo el pastel. • You (formal) try the french fries • Usted prueba las papas fritas • We taste the tuna. • Nosotros probamos el atún.

  12. PODER • Poder means “to be able to” • It is an “-er” verb • It is usually followed by an infinitive to say what someone may, is able to, or can do • Stem: PODer • New stem : PUED • ¿Puedo ir al bano?

  13. Practica con poder • I can eat apples. • Yo puedo comer manzanas. • You can taste the juice. • Tú puedes probar el jugo • We can sleep until 11:00 am. • Podemos dormir hasta las once de la mañana.
