  2. I hope YOU had a great summer. Kathryn Berger became Mrs. Snearly. Linda Cleary became Mrs. Juntgen. Brooke Baucom became Mrs. Thomas. Susan Ballard became Joseph’s grandmother. Margaret Sclafani and Jessica Garner prepared to take their oldest child to kinder. Teachers traveled to other countries: Christina Bachiller, Elizabeth Nagari, Claudia Notaro and Andrew Rosene studied in Spain. Sharon Williams, Jessica Garner took students overseas. Edna Castiblanco and Rosana Gonzales returned to Colombia. Edna Castiblanco lost her father.

  3. Now… it is back-to-school Please welcome and support the manyteachers who have been transferred to new schools and sometimes to new levels. Please welcome those new to our group: Martha Banderas (Monroe MS) joins Spanish teaching as a past ESL teacher. Flor Elena Rativa (Rock Rest) joins ES Spanish as a past grade level teacher. Robin Hentz transfers from teaching Language Arts at PWMS to French at CMS

  4. District Overview: L2 82 L2 teachers this year 108 L2 teachers last year 20 ES positions not filled; VIF contracts not renewed or cancelled; teachers transferred to MS or HS; ES Spanish reduced to weekly classes. HS Reductions in L2: FHHS 1 Spanish/ French; PRHS 1 German; PWHS 1 Spanish; SVHS 1 Spanish; WHS ½ Chinese; WHS ½ French; WHS ½ German; CMS opened 3rd MS French program

  9. Happenings at the state level New “Essential Standards” are being written for second languages k-12 that will replace NCSCOS. Textbook moratorium No new texts will be adopted this year for MS or HS second languages. When new texts will be adopted is unknown. Whether new workbooks will be free next year is to be determined.

  10. What I did on my summer “vacation” …

  11. I came face-to-face with the image of our students. They are digital natives. I am not. Note their access to technology.

  12. It hit me… “big time” that the rules have changed. Paper is going out, out, out.

  13. I read, studied and tested the new teacher toolbox.

(beyond white boards, overhead transparencies, workbooks, photocopies, notebook paper) • Reading / Writing: • Digital storytelling, Toondoons • Online newspapers • Wikis, blogs, Glogster • Forums, discussion boards • Social Media • Twitter • Facebook • Online surveys • Online document sharing

(besides DVDs, CDs and me, the teacher) Listening / Speaking Digital recording: audio and video: Audacity, FLIP video cameras, Cell phones You Tube, SchoolTube, Teacher Tube Online tv station videoclips Online music: itunes, Pandora Radio Online videoconferencing: Skype, Tokbox; Dimdim, etc.

  22. 2008-2009 L2 Goals to Maintain in 2009-2010 Integrate technology Strive for you and your students to use the target language to the MAX Connect with a target language community or person through Skype, email, blogs, TeacherTube productions, Moodle, etc. Be a factor in the globalization of your school environment

  23. It IS a new century.The journey begins! If we each aim at learning a few new technologies each year … and share with our colleagues, we can attempt to stay in tune with our changing world. Seek out leaders. Everyone has something to offer. Thank you to those of you who lead the way.
