  4. 4-H Age • The North Carolina 4-H Youth Development programs are open to young people aged 5 through 18 (Note: This is through their 18th year; if they are 19 years old on January 1, they cannot compete). 4-H age is determined by a young person's age on January 1 of the 4-H program year which runs (January 1 to December 31). This is consistent with National 4-H competitive guidelines. 4-H participation should involve age-appropriate experiences designed for youth aged 5 to 8 (Cloverbuds) and youth aged 9 through 18. • 4-H Program Year • The North Carolina 4-H Youth Development Program Year is January 1 - December 31. This is consistent with National 4-H competitive guidelines. All State Competitive Events and Activities operate on the 4-H Program Year. • All competitive 4-H programs will be judged based on 4-H’ers work from January 1 – December 31.

Purpose of NC 4-H Awards Program • Provide youth an opportunity for rewards and recognition. • Inspire creative thinking and encourage 4-H’ers to discover and develop their talents through life skill development opportunities. • Preparing youth to face adversities that they will encounter in life.

County Staff/AgentsRole & Expectations • Develop a county awards program to include the components that were just mentioned • Provide training on all areas of awards: • application process, guidelines, incentives, county categories, deadlines, etc • Screen on the County Level before coming to District or State Competition • Achievement Program to recognize winners • Youth are active in 4-H because it benefits them personally so agents need to develop recognition opportunities that recognize their 4-H’ers. • Register for District & State events as appropriate

  23. Project Records Forms – Committee is working to release a new form in 2015 for 13 – 15 & 16-18 9-10, 11-12 forms are slated for release in the fall, winter of 2015 Forms are going to compliment 4-H Portfolio Looking for funding to increase award level to $100 from $50.

Each county can submit 2 record books per age category for District Competition. ie – two (2) 9-10, Animal Science Record Books. • Each 4-H’er can submit 2 records total. • District awards are given for each age group. • Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded. • Gold winners receive a $50 award

NC 4-H Portfolio What: A record of 3 years work in a project Why: 4-H’ers learn to share and process, develop life skills Who: 13-15 and 16-18 How: Transfer information from project records onto portfolio record form. Includes project accomplishments, leadership, community service, citizenship, story and other supporting materials.

  34. Each 4-H’er can submit 2 Portfolio’s for District & State competition. Counties can submit as many per category as necessary.

  38. Electric Portfolio’s A 4-H’er who completes an Electric Portfolio is not guaranteed a trip to NC 4-H Electric Congress. Portfolio Electric Congress Delegates are selected based on the quality and content of their portfolio by a trained selection committee. All books are expected to meet the State Office format requirements.

Selection criteria include: Knowledge and skills gained while participating in the 4-H Electric Project Exhibit an increase in knowledge each year 4-H experiences in Leadership, Citizenship & Community Service Sharing the 4-H Electric program with others (includes teaching or assisting with electric project activities)

  47. Presentation Cloverbud participation will continue to be a part of all DAD’s. Outdoor Cooking – all 9-10 & 11-13 year olds must have an adult who is responsible for them at District Day and State Presentation Finals.
