  1. Chapter 10The Rock Cycle The parent material for all rock is magma! But other forces are at work, so geologists classify rocks into three major types.

  2. Major Rock Types Igneous – meaning “from fire”, is cooled magma (lava) Sedimentary – compressed and hardened sediments Metamorphic - meaning “changed form”, by tremendous pressure, heat, or chemical processes

  3. The Rock Cycle Any rock can be broken into sediment... Sedimentary Any rock can be melted into magma... Igneous Any rock can be changed by heat and pressure deep in the earth... Metamorphic Any rock can become any other type of rock!

  4. Igneous rocks are cooled from magma (lava)... Weathering ... Wind, rain, erosion, act on all types of rock. The small pieces of sediment are washed downhill, into lakes, rivers, or oceans. Sediments are buried by more sediments and pressed together in to sedimentary rocks. Any type of rock can also be exposed to heat and pressure deep in the earth and become metamorphic rock.
