  4. Introduction to Gandhi • Born on the 2nd of October 1869 and passed away on the 30th of January 1948 • Fought for the civil rights of Indian immigrants in South Africa • Fought for the liberation of India from British colonial rule • His entire family follows a branch of Hinduism

  5. Background knowledge • From the beginning of the 17th century, The British started their occupation over India • Indian opposition to colonial rule started in the early 20th Century

  6. Timeline of what had happened • 1888: Sails to England to study law at the University College in London • 1891: Admitted to the British bar • 1891: Became a barrister • 1893: Employed to be a legal advisor in Durban • 1893: Indians were brought to South Africa to labour on sugar estates

  8. Timeline of what had happened • 1906: Gandhi began campaigning against laws prohibiting black South Africans • Lead the Indians in demonstrations • Organise protests • 1914: Made a reform package – South Africa government accepted it
