  3. The Family at a glance • God has given responsibilities to every member of the family • Let’s start by answering a few questions… • Whose responsibility are the following? Obey Guide Train Provide Respect Instruct

  4. First Commandment with a Promise • What does God expect from children in their relationship to their parents and leaders? • Obey them because it is right • V. 1 • Honour them for our wellness and longevity • V. 2 • Obey them in the Lord in all things as long as it is not contrary to the law of God • Colossians 3: 20

  5. What children must not do to their parents • Curse • Despise • Neglect • Beat • Disobey • Disrespect • Ignore Exodus21:15; 2 Timothy 3:1,2

  6. Samuel (1 Samuel 2:11,20,26; 3:19) Examples of Godly Children Esther (Esther 2:10,11,20) Rechabites ( Jeremiah 35:18,19) Philip’s daughters (Acts 21:8,9) Jesus Christ, our perfect example obeyed His Heavenly Father(John 8:28,29)

  7. Good and godly parents • Provoke not their children to wrath • Ephesians 6: 4 • Bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord • Ephesians 6: 4 • Discipline children with love and compassion • Proverbs 29: 15 • Train up their children in the way he should go: • Proverbs 22:6

At School and Church • Punctuality, Obedience to school rules, Respect for teachers, No exam malpractice, and Good participation in class. • Places of work • Punctuality and Diligence • Give correct information, Don’t falsify records, and Obey superiors • Avoid confrontation and follow due process in resolving conflicts. • Society at Large • Be a good ambassador for Christ (Acts 11: 26) Titus 2:9,10; Romans12:11

Are we supposed to obey masters who are not born again? • Yes, we obey them because of Christ • Our complete obedience brings glory to God (verses 5,7) • God put them over us, hence, it is the will of God that we obey them (verse 6) • Joseph under Portiphar • However if they ask us to commit sin, we MUST SAY NO • E.g. Daniel under King Nebuchadnezer

Questions • What is the expectation of God as youths relate with their parents and teachers? • Mention children who obeyed or disobeyed their parents in the Scriptures • How should Christian youths obey their masters and teachers? • Why should Christian youths obey their masters and teachers? • Why does God command masters to deal well with the servants?
