  3. History of the Hospital Corps • Established on 17 June 1898 (112 years old) • Navy’s only enlisted Corps • First women in HM rating Jan 1944 • 22 Hospital Corpsman awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor (most of any rating) • Served in every conflict/war with every branch of military service

  4. Hospital Corps School Mission: To educate and train Sailors to perform as apprentice-level Hospital Corpsman • Twelve weeks of didactic academic training • Anatomy / Physiology • Emergency Medicine • Nursing Care / Concepts • Two weeks of hands on Clinical Instruction • Constant SAILORIZATION and development

Independent Duty Corpsman • Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) • Specialized one year medical training • Must be E-5 or above • Work independently on Navy ships, clinics, Marines Corps, and special units Basic Principals: 1) Prevent illness and injury.             2) Treat illness and injury.   3) If unable to treat, route the ill or injured to definitive medical care.
