  2. Weight • Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on an object. • Would your weight be the same if you were on the moon? You would weigh about 1/6 of what you weigh on Earth!

  3. MASS • Measurement of the amount of matter in an object. • Does your mass change on the moon? • A physical property

  4. Units of Mass • International Systems of Unit “SI” • SI unit of mass is the KILOGRAM. • How many grams are in a kilogram? 1,000

  5. What is my mass? = 150 grams = 5 grams

  6. Volume • The amount of space that matter occupies. • Liquids, Solids, & Gases have volume.

  7. Units of Volume • liter (L) • milliliter (mL) • cubic centimeter (cm³) 1 Liter bottle = 1,000 milliliters 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter

  8. What is my volume? = 4.92892159 milliliters = 355 milliliters

Calculating Volume • Volumes of solids are usually expressed in cubic centimeters • Volume = Length x width x height • Don’t forget to label the units! • How do you measure the volume of an irregular object? If a penny makes the water go up 4 milliliters, what is its volume? 4 cubic centimeters Water level rise = Volume of object in milliliters

  10. Density Density relates the mass of a material in a given volume. • Two materials have the same volume, do they have to have the same mass? NO! A kilogram of sand takes up much less space than a kilogram of feathers! # of grams in one cubic centimeter The volumes differ because they have different densities.

  11. Density of Water • Water at room temperature = 1g/cm³ This means: every gram of water has a volume of 1 cm³ Mass Volume Density =
