  1. Measuring Matter MFMS

  2. Mass vs. Weight • Mass- a measurement of how much matter an object contains • Weight- a measurement of the force of gravity on you • What is the difference? Weight will change on different planets, when the force of gravity may be more or less. Mass stays the same.

  3. Volume of Regular Objects • Volume- the amount of space an object takes up • Solids, liquids, and even gases take up space • Length x Width x Height is the formula for rectangular objects • Unit= cm3

  4. Volume of Irregular Shaped Objects • Since “irregular” shaped objects are difficult to measure, you can find their volume by WATER DISPLACEMENT • How does water displacement work? Put the object in a graduated cylinder containing water and measure how much the water level rises. • 1 ml= 1 cm3

  5. Density • Different substances may have the same mass, but they don’t necessarily share the same volume….. • Density-the measurement of how much mass is contained in a given volume • Formula: Density = Mass__ Volume

  6. Density Video Clip

  7. Video Clip Questions • Each kind of substance has its own density. How is this helpful to scientists? • What is the density of water? • Objects with densities greater than water will ________. • Objects with densities less that water will ________.

  8. Density Word Problems
