  2. What is a COGNATE? Examples: words that are cognates words that are NOT in Spanish and English cognates

  3. Definition: • Cognate • n. a word related to a word in another language • [Latin co (same) • + gnatus (born)]

  4. English comes from the Germanic language family. Spanish comes from the Romancelanguage family.

  5. So WHY are there so many cognates between Spanish and English?

These French words came from Latin and therefore share the same roots as Spanish.
