  2. Understanding the Aging Process • The Aging Process- the manner in which the body changes as a natural result of growing older.

  3. Slowing or Preventing Loss of Bone Mass • Osteoporosis- loss of bone mass • Bone mass peaks around age 27-32 • There is a connection between bone mass and physical activity • Proper nutrition is important in preventing loss of bone mass • Milk • Yogurt • Canned salmon

  4. Modifying Your Activity • As you age, you may have to adjust your FITT and add recovery time between workouts • Continue to add variety to maintain adherence • Adherence- the ability to stay with an exercise plan • What are 2 behaviors that can slow the aging process? • Diet • Activity

  6. Leisure-Time Activities • Leisure-Time Activities- sports and other action-oriented pursuits done for recreation. • Can improve: • Reduce stress level • Social interaction • Burn calories • Try different activities and select ones your enjoy.

  7. Leisure-Time Activities • Aquatic Activities • Cycling • Water and snow skiing • Dance • Volleyball • Racquetball and Tennis • Kayaking and Canoeing • Does dance help health related, skill related fitness or both?

Finding Qualified Experts • Physicians- Doctors in general practice or who specialize such as an orthopedist. • Physical Therapist- health professionals trained to work with people who are recovering from injuries. • Athletic Trainers- professionals who work with athletes undergoing rehabilitation • Registered Dietitians- professionals who specialize in providing nutritional advice and helping people control their weight.

  9. Finding Qualified Experts • Exercise Physiologist- specially trained to understand the body’s physical reactions to exercise • Health Educators and Physical Educators- Instructors of the health and fitness field • Always check credentials of any professionals in which you are working.
