  1. ETL115 Physical Education and Health Week 1: Curriculum, Pedagogy and PE

  2. For some, PE is a subject that they dread, they fear, and think they can't teach - some may not want to teach PE!  The task of having an unruly bunch of kids, outdoors and on the loose is all too much!  For others though the challenge of teaching a group of students in the range of tasks that make up PE is something they strive hard to meet head on.

  3. There is a difference between knowing what to teach (content) and knowing how to teach (pedagogy) however they cannot be separated, they are interwoven. Teaching is complex, there is no single way of doing it and each of us must find our own way

  4. A good teacher has a range of skills and techniques. Knowing when and how to use them is the key. In PE the same principles apply to teaching and learning as they do in other subjects. We want our students to learn, we also want them to enjoy our class.

  5. If you do not believe in the importance of Health and Physical education as a key learning area you will not prepare the lesson well nor will you teach it well.

  6. In your physical education class you will work with: • Physical abilities from poor to excellent. • Different needs and interests. • Some who like PE & sport and others who hate it.

  7. Physical Activity Physical activity is any body movement produced by skeletal muscles that result in an expenditure of energy. The World Health Organization states physical activity includes 'all movements in everyday life, including work, recreation, exercise and sporting activities‘.

  8. Physical Education Physical education focuses on skill development, sports specific strategies and beneficial outcomes of engagement. Through regular and active participation in physical activity, students extend their fundamental movement skills and develop specialised skills and ideas and apply them to games and physical activities.

  9. The components of physical education are; • basic movement • fundamental motor skills • ball handling • athletics • aquatics • games • dance • gymnastics • sport education • outdoor education

  10. Our role as educators is teaching and getting others to understand the value of physical education. Making a difference requires effective use of different tools. Overall the goals of a good physical education program must be compatible with the overall goals of a good school.
