UKBA • UKBA is the United Kingdom Border Agency. • They decide who can come into the country • They decide if a student must leave a country • They are responsible for all students who study on a Student Visa • They decide all of the rules for Student Visas and Bradford College of Management (BCM) must follow these rules • They work closely with BCM and often visit the college to check the students are obeying the UKBA rules

  4. UKBA What are the 3 BIG UKBA rules all students MUST obey if they want to stay in the College and in the UK?

  5. UKBA 1. Students must come to all their lessons 2. Students must pay all their fees 3. Students can work IF their VISA allows them. Students can only work the hours shown on their VISA. Students can not work when they have lessons To find out if you can work look at your VISA or ask a WELFARE OFFICER

  6. 1. Come to all your lessons Lessons are as they are printed on your timetable (this may change each term). Lessons must run for a minimum of 15 hours per week and for a minimum of 29 weeks a year to meet UKBA requirements. You must attend ALL lessons – we monitor attendance You can only make appointments for days you are not in College! Students who are late will not be marked on the register. Students must come to all lessons ON TIME! Remember : You are here to study- You must work around your lesson schedule, the college will not work around you!

Classroom rules • Students cannot enter class who are more than 20 minutes late – you must wait on the common room for end of break • Students will have registration removed if they have broken the registration policy • No chewing gum in college • No food/ hot drinks in the classroom • Students must put all rubbish in bin • Computers are only for classroom work • When teacher is speaking students must listen • Students must respect the teacher, classmates and the college at all times • Students must only speak English

  8. Attendance monitoring If you do not come to your lesson the college will call and email you to find out why you are not in class. If you do not answer your phone, or email with a satisfactory answer or come to class immediately the following actions will take place 3 unauthorised absences 1st Warning letter 2nd Warning letter College will call your family 6 unauthorised absences 3rd Warning letter. College will call your family 9 unauthorised absences Following 10 unauthorised contacts will be reported to UKBA Student will be expelled and file will be closed

Questions on attendance? • How many lessons must you come to? • What happens if you miss three lessons? • What happens if you miss six lessons? • What happens if you miss ten lessons? • When can a student make an appointment like at the doctors or bank? • What happens if you are late for a lesson? • Does the College allow students to be late? • Can you miss a lesson because you are tired? • Can you leave a lesson early? • If you can not come to college because you are ill what must you do?

Pay your fees on time • Students must meet with the Finance Officer on Induction day or as soon as possible to arrange a payment plan if fees have not been paid in full • Tuition fees do not include the following: registration/membership fees with course awarding body, examination fees/exam re-sits, text book fees • All Students on a Student VISA had to show the UKBA they had enough money to pay for their fees before they were allowed entrance into the UK. Therefore all students should be able to pay all fees. If you do not have this money you have lied to UKBA and the college! • If you do not do your work, come to class or pay your fees the College will not give you any doctors letter, Student ID card, College letters, holiday letters, stamp tax or travel forms and may expel you from the College and report you to the UKBA • To keep track of your fees please visit your VLE • For more information about fees see the STUDENT HANDBOOK

WORKING IN THE UK Students who are found to be working when they should be in class will be reported to the UKBA and your employer will be told you are working when you should be in college Students who are found to be working illegally will be reported to the UKBA, your employer will be told you are working illegal and you will be withdrawn from the college. ANY STUDENT WHO IS WITHDRAWN FROM THE COLLEGE BECAUSE THEY HAVE BROKEN THE UKBA AND COLLEGE RULES MUST STILL PAY ALL COLLEGE FEES

AWARDING BODY • BCM follow the specifications and assessment rules laid down by the relevant Awarding Body – SEE PROGRAMME HANDBOOK • You MUST register with your Awarding Body and pay your course provider fees. BCM will register you on your behalf once the required fee has been paid Edexcel Registration fee HNC=£250, HND=£300, PGD=£300 ATHE registration fee: Level 5 = £255 Level 6 = £280 Level 7 = £295 • For more information on your course provider visit their websites www. edexcelonline.com and www.atheuk.comor read your course handbook • If you do not register, pay your course fees and pass all your work you will fail your course and will get no certificate and this may effect your VISA statue with the UKBA

Assignment Submission • All students studying ATHE or EDEXCEL courses must submit and pass assignments to successfully complete their course • Teachers will give help to students to understand their assignment and will commit time for students to write their assignments in and out of classroom time • Students must hand in all assignments in both hard and soft copy to Reception by the date stated on the front of the assignment • Any student who hands in a late assignment will pay a late fee and can only be given a pass or refer. • Students must not Plagiarize their assignments. Plagiarize means to copy from other students, books or the internet. All quotes must be correctly referenced • For more information on assignment submission please see the STUDENT HANDBOOK page 10

  15. Edexcel hnc/hnd & athe programmes • HNC – 8 units usually 12 months • HND – 16 units usually 2 years • EACH Unit is assessed by an assignment so HNC = 8 assignments HND = 16 assignments ATHE 5 – 9 units over 12 months ATHE 6 – 10 units over 18 months ATHE 7 – 7 units over 12 – 24 months • To receive certificate & pass the course you must complete and PASS ALL of the assignments

  16. assessment • You have to pass ALL the relevant Assessment Criteria for you qualification • If you pass your work may be seen by the Internal Verifier • You work will be seen by the External Examiner from ATHE / Edexcel • If you do not pass you will be given advice on what to do and allowed to have another go • Your assignments will not be marked unless you have paid the relevant Awarding Body fee • If you hand in late you will be charged £50 per assignment for late marking.

Support Services • At BCM lots of support is available for students to help them in their course and in their time in England • Student Support Officer: confidential counseling, accommodation, registering with a GP, travel information, help on opening a bank account, complaints, advice on academic services and more • Welfare Officer: visa and immigration, student cards and letters such as bank letters, application to universities, other colleges or course providers and more • Teachers: Any concerns or problems they may be having regarding course work, progressions, syllabus, assessments, study skills, advice on plagiarism, extra learning support • Student Representatives: Entertainment in the college, Complaints, Questions about course, college work or other classroom issues • For more information on Support Services read your STUDENT HANDBOOK

  19. College facilities Library Facilities Students can borrow books from the library for free. If you wish to borrow any books please report to Reception. The library is a place for quiet study, and is also open in the holidays for students who want a quiet place to revise Computer Suites BCM has two computer suites, students can use the computers for assignment writing or checking emails at break time Common Rooms BCM has two common rooms with microwave, fridge and coffee machine for eating and drinking. There is also a pool table, ping pong table and 4 internet connected computers for entertainment Pray room Is located on the 6th floor and can be used in break times ONLY! Free English Lessons Students who want to improve their English lessons can ask to take part in the FREE English lessons Teacher and Students ONE 2 ONE Students who want to ask their teacher for extra help or advice can arrange a meeting with their teacher outside of lesson time. Please speak to your teacher or email them at the teachers BCM email address

Student Obligations • Students must ensure that all personal data given to the College • is accurate and up-to-date. • Any change of circumstance or address must be notified to • reception/admin team immediatelyin writing • College reserves the right to supply 3rd party organisations e.g. • the police, UKBA, Local Authorities, Exam Boards/Awarding • bodies etc with students’ personal information as provided to us. • Students must comply with all college policies and procedures • Students must attend all their lessons

Accommodation All students must live in Bradford or as close as possible to the college Students who live far away from the college will find it difficult getting to lessons on time and will therefore receive no attendance Living close to the college will also reduce long train and bus journeys and living costs. If you do not live near the college speak to the Student Support Officer who can give you help and advise on finding accommodation

  22. Health and safety • All Students have a responsibility to prevent injury to themselves, their fellow students, BCM Employees and any other person whilst on BCM premises. • Students are required to report any accidents which have occurred, whilst on college premises as soon as possible to receptionwhere, a First Aider will be alerted if required and you will fill out an accident report form • Fire Procedure • The Fire alarm is tested every Monday at 11am. • At any time other than this on hearing the fire alarm everyone must immediately make their way to the assembly point for the roll call. • The assembly point is outside the building opposite security office. • You must use the nearest fire exit but you must not use the lift. • You must not stop to collect your belongings upon leaving. • Note: Smoking is not permitted in any part of the building

  23. Complaints • If you have any complaints please discuss these with your tutor/assessor. In the event your complaint cannot be solved this way, please follow the stated procedure: • Tell your complaint to the Head of Department. Student VLE • Access VLE by BCM website • You will get a username and password when you have registered and paid fees • VLE gives students information on Fees, timetable, messages from management, personal details, course resources, assignments and much more. BCM FACEBOOK PAGE Visit the college Facebook page and become friends with more BCM students and share photos of the college with family and friends CONTACT STAFF You can email all staff at BCM by sending an email to admin@bcmuk.org. Staff will respond to you as soon as possible

  26. Reception • The Receptionist are the face of BCM and are here to help all students. They follow BCM rules, work directly for the Principal and have final say. • Students and their families/friends must respect and obey receptionist at all times • Any student/ student friend of family who shouts or is rude to a receptionist will be punished • Students can only use mobile phones in common room! Not reception, classroom or corridors • To enter the building students must press the bell ONLY ONCE! • Any student who lies to reception will be punished • Reception can refuse to speak to anyone who is rude or abusive and can get security to escort them off the premises

  27. Student Discipline • 1. Verbal Warning by Teacher • 2. Written Warning by Director of Studies • 3. Meeting with Director, Suspension and Sponsor contacted • 4. Expelled • In extreme cases discipline point 3 and 4 will be brought forward

  28. Question Time • 1. Can students come into classroom if they are 21 minutes late? • 2. Can students drink water in the classroom • 3. Are students allowed to use FACEBOOK on computers? • 4. What happens if a student is used to be using his phone in class? • 5. What happens if a students is chewing gum and it’s a second time? • 6. What happen if student is speaking to friends while teacher is speaking and it is a third time? • 7. Can students go to the toilet in pairs or groups? • 8. What happens if a student is violent to a classmate or teacher?
