  2. Chapter 12.1 VoIP 1. What is VoIP? 1.1 What is the advantage? 1.2 What are characteristics? 1.3 What is the difference VoXX? 2. What is the existing “IP Telephone Service”? 3. What is “IP network” for VoIP? 4. What is the protocol of ITU-T H.323? 5. What is the connection type of VoIP? 6. What is “KX-TDA0480(VoIP Gateway Card)? 6.1 Where are the benefits of KX-TDA0480? 6.2 How is the connection of KX-TDA0480? 6.3 How is the construction of KX-TDA0480? 6.4 What are the KX-TDA0480 Functions? 7. What are Router Functions for the QOS?

  3. 1.What is “VoIP” ? Voice over IP (Internet Protocol) is the technology for transmission of voice over IP network. IP Connectionless communication Voice signal -> Packet data Packet data -> Voice signal IP Network VoIP-GW VoIP-GW VoIP is "One of the leased line” in the current state.

  4. Background TCP/IP is the de facto standard of Data Communication Analog Communication Digital Communication Data(Packet) Communication T1/E1/ISDN VoIP(VoFR/VoATM) Internet increases explosively, and has gained in popularity. And as Data (IP) traffic increases, it can pass the voice traffic.

  5. Traffic of Communication [Tera Byte ] Data communication 700,000 Number of Host Computer X1,000 600,000 Voice 500,000 400,000 ‘97 ‘98 ‘99 ‘00 ‘01 ‘02 ‘03 300,000 200,000 100,000 0 1999 2000 2001 2002 1997 1998 2003 [Year] Users of the Internet: 3 Billion in the world / 30 Million in Japan

  6. IP-GW IP-GW Fire wall (Proxy Server) Fire wall (Proxy Server) 1.1 What is the advantage of VoIP? It is possible toreduce the cost of line and telephone calls by the integration of voice and data. Public Line Leased Line PBX PBX PT/SLT PT/SLT IP-Network SW HUB Router Router SW HUB The capacity of the line increases for voice data

  7. 1.2 What are Characteristics of VoIP? (1)Connectionless communication(IP,UDP) The communication route cannot be secured. (2)Best effort type communication The quality is not guaranteed, when the traffic becomes congested. (Telephone network is Guarantee Type communication) (3)QOS(Service quality) is weak - Delay Time - Jitter - Packet loss Therefore, it is necessary to implement the VoIP in the network where QoS is controlled. (4)Overhead is large • The header of the IP is long compared with the • header of the ATM and the Frame Relay. • Therefore, it reduces the delay time by the router • in the header compression.

  8. 1.3 What is the difference with VoXX?(1/2) Good Quality of Voice Size of Network Large <Reason why VoIP is activated> (1) IP is based on high layer, and it is possible to use without the restriction of the line type. (2)The range of application is wide and the extendibility is also high. (3)The quality of the VoIP device improved, and the price became reasonable.

  9. IP-GW IP-GW Router 1.3 What is the difference with VoXX?(2/2) (1) VoIP VoIP over FR PBX V I F PT/SLT Layer4 Layer3 Layer2 Router or VoIP over ATM V I A Layer4 Layer3 Layer2 FR/ATM Line FR/ATM Line (2) VoFR PBX V F Layer3 Layer2 PT/SLT FRAD FRAD FR Line FR Line Frame Relay or ATM Network (3) VoATM PBX ATM Line ATM Line A V PT/SLT Layer3 Layer2 ATM ATM

  12. 3.What is “IP network” for VoIP? (1) Digital Leased Line (2) IP-VPN (3) Frame Relay(VoIP over FR) (4) Internet We don’t recommend to use, because Internet is the network type of “Best effort ” and QoS is not guaranteed by the following reasons. - It is not possible to control the network. • - The delay is large. • - Non-symmetry network.

  13. 4.What is the protocol of ITU-T H.323? (1) History of H.323 - V1(NOV., 1996) Visual telephone systems and equipment for local area networks which provide a non-guaranteed quality of service. - V2(FEB.,1998) Packet-based multimedia communication systems. (2) H.323 is used as a control protocol of the IP telephone. H.323 is the current main system for making the network IP in the future.
