What Is Biometric • Jones P & Williams P,Hillier D, Comfort D, 2007 Originally used in the context of statistical methods • Now, biometric is being used to refer to methods for exclusively distinguishing a person ,based on one or more inherent, bodily or behavioral traits which can be used to confirm one’s identity. • Physical characteristics • Behavioral characteristics

  4. History of biometrics • Joao de Barros ,in 2007, gave 1st evidence ,China in 14th century • Anthropologist ,Alphonse Bertillon,1890s ,for identifying convicted criminals • development of ‘Bertillonage’ method of identification through body measurement • Richard Edward Henry of Scotland Yard

Biometric Identity: initiative of the Indian Government • UIDAI(Unique Identification Authority of India),Aadhar • NandanNilekani ,Chairman of UIDAI said “The unique ID is going to be a unique number and not a card .It will be a unique number based on a person’s demographic and biometric information that will be unique to an individual” • UIDAI has selected three consortiums led by Accenture, Mahindra Satyam and L-1 Identity solutions

  6. Contd. • Biometrics will be provided at Rs. 2.75/individual, lowest cost in the world • Contract will run for 2 years or 200 million enrollments which ever comes first.

Potential for Biometrics in Retailing • Fraudulent transactions and identity theft are arising at a rapid pace • Biometric supporters throughout the world feel that biometric technology • Provides secure ,positive identification of shoppers, based on fingerprints • Eliminates the possibility of credit , debit card fraud due to theft • Reduces the queue for payment

Obstacles for Implementing Biometrics Solutions • Initial Capital Cost • Uncertainty about the accuracy of biometric technology • Elderly people encounter problems in enrolling biometrics because of the changing contours of their fingers • Those who cover their face and head due to community or religious belief will face difficulty in registering their facial expressions

  10. Conclusion The popular mode of retail payment today is through credit/debit cards . But these modes of payment are susceptible to fraud and theft as the personal identification number can be hacked or stolen. Biometric technology can plug this loop hole and can make the payment system more secure
