  1. Electrical Power Systems (WBS 4) S. Ramakrishnan NCSX PROJECT – D TO C Site DC Transmission PDR February 17 2004 S. Ramakrishnan Slide 1

  2. Electrical Power System Tasks • Provide Source of all Electric Power for NCSX *Project CDR successfully held in May 2002; PDR successfully held in Oct. 2003 • All AC Power • At all Distribution Voltage levels • 13.8kV,4.16kV,480V, 208/120V • Includes Experimental AC Power • Includes AC Power to Future NB • Includes all Auxiliary AC Power up to Power Panels • All DC Experimental Power • Provide DC power for stellarator coil systems • 3 Modular, 1 TF, and 5 PF coils grouped in SIX circuits • PS requirements based on First Plasma Scenario • Clear path for future upgrades (other scenarios, flexibility) • Provide Diagnostics support for Sensor cabling • Grounding S. Ramakrishnan Slide 2

  3. PPPL Site Plan PPPL Site Plan FCPC BLDG FCPC BLDG DC Transmission DC Transmission TEST Cell TFTR Test Cell NCSX Control Room Location NCSX Control Room Location NCSX C-Site Location NCSX C-Site Location MG BLDG MG BLDG S. Ramakrishnan Slide 3

  4. D-Site Power Supplies • D-site power supplies used for Modular, TF, and PF circuits • Ample power and stored energy available (475 MVA and 2.2 GJ per MG) • Ample flexibility for future upgrades (74 PSS Exist) • Only 40 needed in Final Phase • C-site supplies available for Trim coils S. Ramakrishnan Slide 4

  5. Power Supplies Shared with NSTX S. Ramakrishnan Slide 5

  6. TYPICAL CIRCUIT NCSX CT- Current Transducer PT-Voltage Transducer G- Ground fault Relaying S. Ramakrishnan Slide 6

  7. Typical Circuit Arrangement Contd. • DC power transmitted from D-site (FCPC) to C-site (EF/OH Bldg) via overhead transmission (1000 MCM cables) • Disconnect and grounding switches provided at both ends • Existing cables used to connect to MG bus to Test Cell • Current/ Voltage transducers provided • Rapid changeover (4 hrs) possible S. Ramakrishnan Slide 7

  8. DC Transmission Structure • Design of Structure sub-contracted to Burns Group (BG) • BG has submitted preliminary drawings for PPPL Review and Comments • This review is to provide comments to BG on the proposed Structure S. Ramakrishnan Slide 8

  9. Schedule for Installing DC Transmission • BG to Complete Design by 03/31/04 • Present the final BG design in an FDR at PPPL before end of April 2004. • PPPL to provide comments on the preliminary design by BG by 02/27/04 S. Ramakrishnan Slide 9

  10. Conclusions • Sharing D-site power supplies with NSTX is cost-effective for powering NCSX coils • Technical risks are minimal • Since this is standard electrical work • Cost risks are modest • Schedule risks are addressed • Enough Float in Schedule • Is performed by experienced personnel. • Careful planning with NSTX operating schedule • Completion in time to support PTP/ISTP • Highest priority to Personnel Safety with Disconnect & Ground switches and Mechanical & Electrical Interlocks S. Ramakrishnan Slide 10
