  5. Compromise of 1850 • North • California – free state • Washington D.C. – slave trade in band • South • Popular Sovereignty in rest of land from Mexican War • Texas gets $10 million • Fugitive Slave Law

  6. Fugitive Slave Act • Said: • “Any & all runaway slaves were, upon capture, to be returned to their masters” • Federal Commission: • Held trials: • If accused found innocent = $5.00 • If accused found guilty = $10.00

  7. Underground Railroad Was a system of secret routes And safe houses for Slaves to Escape to the free states & Canada. Lead by: Harriet Tubman

Kansas – Nebraska Act • Proposed by: • Stephen Douglas • Said: • Nebraska territory would break into 2 states(Popular Sovereignty) • Kansas – free state • Nebraska – Slave state • Missouri hated it ???????????????? • Impact: • Caused Bleeding Kansas • Southerner’s flock to Kansas to “assist” in the slave vote • Missourian's flock to Kansas to keep slavery out • 200 people die • $200 million in property was destroyed
