  1. Elizabeth Bryant, Period 8, 12/13/12 Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages Electricity can be cheaply generated using petroleum. Petroleum is easily transported to power stations. Power plants can be built anywhere if they can get a supply of petroleum. Disadvantages Petroleum causes pollution and releases carbon dioxide. One of petroleum’s byproducts, lead, can have severe health impacts on children. We will eventually run out of petroleum because it is being used so fast. Description of Petroleum Petroleum means oil from the earth. It is formed from animal and plant matter compressed under layers of sand and silt for millions of years. Petroleum is a non-renewable resource. Petroleum How We Turn Petroleum Into Energy We Use To turn petroleum into energy that we can use, petroleum drilled from deep underground is burned. That heat turns water into steam, which turns a turbine. The turbine turns a generator which produces electrical power. Then the electricity is used to heat our homes, power our technology, and much more.
