  2. Measurement in LSCPurpose here: think broadly about what to measure, and touch briefly on howYou need to adapt and apply to your LSC goal goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  3. Overview • Tie to theory of LSC • Six purposes of measurement in LSC • How to think about measurement • Four useful assumptions about measurement • Seven categories of measurement in LSC • Discussion and reflection to end your journey goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  4. Six purposes of measurementin LSC efforts • Help clarify “topic…vision…key themes” • Create “sufficient mix of pressure, etc.” • Assure that “pragmatic changes” are “sufficiently effective and visible” • Create “the appearance of success” in order to attract and activate “previously neutral others” • Determine if on path to a “reasonably well-established norm” • Ultimately, provide “full, measured results and unintended consequences” Key Points: (a) measurement is important throughout LSC, and(b) different measurements may be required for different purposes

  5. Thinking about measurement • Thinkobservationanddifference • Paul Plsek’s question: If we are successful, what differences would we expect to observe? • An observation can be the presence or absence of something • Numbers and stories are both useful • Recall theory of LSC: “experienced on an emotional as well as intellectual level” • Look from point of view of reasonable sceptic goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  6. Four Useful AssumptionsAbout Measurement • Your problem is not as unique as you think • You have more data than you think • You need less data than you think • There is a useful measurement that is much simpler than you think Ref: Hubbard DW (2007) How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business. New York: Wiley & Sons. goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  7. Be practical • Talk to knowledgeable others, search Internet, and review literature for measures • Brainstorm existing data, reports, and indicators and ask if they aren’t sufficient (advantage: built-in baseline) • Understand intuition and belief in action-taking; more data obscures, less is clearer • Look for simple, useful measures even if they don’t measure everything goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  8. Seven categories ofmeasurement for LSC • While all may not apply to your goal, consider… • Service delivery outcomes • Health and well-being • Financial performance • Satisfaction and experience of process(service users, carers, staff) • Mindset and behaviour change(service users, carers, staff) • Organisational capability-building • Transformational process indicators goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  9. Notes… • The seven categories overlap; purpose is to think comprehensively, not to categorise • Consider these seven categories for each of the six purposes of measurement in LSC goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  10. Summary • Tie to theory of LSC • Six purposes of measurement in LSC • How to think about measurement • Four useful assumptions about measurement • Seven categories of measurement in LSC • Discussion and reflection goodsquaredcic@gmail.com

  11. Discussion • How do these insights about measurement apply to your LSC work? • What challenges and barriers do you anticipate with regards to measurement in your LSC efforts? • What are your key take-away learnings from this module? goodsquaredcic@gmail.com
