  1. Physical Properties and Changes of Matter

  2. What is a physical property? • The characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance • Examples: • Color -Mass • Shape -Volume • Size -Density • Texture

  3. What is physical change? • A change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance. Will alter the form or appearance of matter. • It does not change the identity of the original substance • Can be reversed

  4. Examples of Physical Changes A common physical change occurs when matter changes from on phase to another. --Ice melts to a liquid --Liquid turns to a gas using heat **You still have the same liquid in all three states, just in a different forms

  5. More Examples of Physical Changes • Sanding a piece of wood • Dissolving sugar into water • Erosion of soil • Tearing of a substance • Aluminum Foil cut in half changing the size and shape • Clay molded into shapes • Rubbing alcohol evaporating

  6. Can you think of anymore??

  7. Chemical Properties and Changes of Matter

  8. What is a chemical change? • When one or more substances are changed into new substances that have new and different properties. • Chemical properties describe which chemical change will occur or not occur • Chemical changes change the identity of the matter involved making it hard to reverse.

  9. Signs of a Chemical Changes • Smell or odor • Bubbles (fizzing or foaming) • Fire or explosion • Color change • Production of heat • Sound or Light given off

  10. Examples of Chemical Changes • Battery is used • Food is digested in your stomach • Sour milk (bacteria has formed new substances) • Baking a cake • Fireworks exploding • Leaves changing color

  11. Pictures of Chemical Changes

  12. Physical vs. Chemical • When trying to decide if a physical change or a chemical change has occurs ask yourself… “Did the composition change?” No-physical change Yes-chemical change

  13. Chemical Reactions Chemical changes are also called chemical reactions. Chemical reactions involve combining different substances which produces a new substance.
