  1. Energy Revision Energy makes “machines” work. Animals get their energy from food. Cars get their energy from petrol. Light bulbs get their energy from electricity.

  2. Types Of Energy The main types of energy that you will meet are kinetic (movement) energy potential (stored) energy sound energy light energy heat energy electrical energy

  3. Energy Changers Machines change energy from one type into other types. Stored energy (gas) is put into a bunsen burner to make it work. When the gas is lit heat energy and light energy are given out. This energy can be shown in the diagram on the next slide.

  4. Energy Changers heat energy in the flame stored energy in the gas light energy in the flame

  5. Energy Changers Machines change energy from one type into other types. Electrical energy is put into a television to make it work. When the television is on we get light energy, the picture, and sound energy given out. This energy can be shown in the diagram on the next slide.

  6. Energy Changers heat energy in the flame stored energy in the gas light energy in the flame

  7. Energy Changers Machines change energy from one type into other types. Calculators often have solar cells on them. The solar cell takes in light energy. This solar cell changes light energy into electrical energy to make the calculator work. This energy can be shown in the diagram on the next slide.

  8. Energy Changers light energy from the sun electrical energy in the calculator

  9. Potential Energy There are three types of potential energy, they are all examples of stored energy. Chemical energy is found in food, petrol and batteries. This chemical energy can be changed into heat, light and kinetic (movement).

  10. Potential Energy Gravitational energy is found in anything that is up high. This gravitational energy is changed into kinetic (movement) energy.

  11. Potential Energy Strain energy is found in anything that is pulled tight. tight spring in toy car This strian energy is changed into kinetic (movement) energy and maybe some sound energy.

  12. The Energy Law Energy cannot be made, it can be changed from one type to another. The energy we have at the start is equal to the energy we have at the end of the change. Energy is measured in joules (J) or kilojoules (kJ).

  13. The Energy Law In this battery powered car, the battery supplies 100 J of chemical energy. This chemical energy is changed into 70 J of kinetic energy moving the car. The remaining 30 J of energy is wasted heating up the motor.

  14. The Energy Law 70 J of movement energy driving the car 100 J of chemical energy from the battery 30 J of heat energy in the motor wasted energy

  15. The Energy Law In this bulb, the electricity supplies 1000 kJ of energy. This energy is changed into 50 kJ of light energy lighting up the room. The remaining 950 kJ of energy is wasted heating up the room.

  16. The Energy Law 50 kJ of light energy in the bulb 1000 kJ of electrical energy 950 kJ of heat energy in the bulb wasted energy

  17. Energy From Food Different foods contain different amounts of energy. Look at the values for 100 g of following foods. sausages 2500 kJ Jaffa Cakes 1500 kJ yoghurt 400 kJ soup 200 kJ Foods that contain a lot of fat and sugar have the most energy in them.

  18. Energy Requirements teenage boy 11 700 kJ teenage girl 9 700 kJ Teenage boys requires more energy than the girls because usually they are bigger and more active.

  19. Energy Requirements male office worker 11 000 kJ manual worker 15 000 kJ teenage boy 11 700 kJ The manual worker requires more energy as he is most active. Since the teenage boy is still growing he needs more energy than the office worker, who sits around for most of the day.

  20. Energy Requirements pregnant woman 10 000 kJ teenage girl 9 700 kJ female office worker 9 800 kJ The pregnant woman requires most energy as she is eating for the baby as well. The office worker requires more energy than the teenage girl as she is bigger than the girl.

  21. Take Care Of Energy Natural gas, petrol and coal are known as fuels as they burn to release energy. We also call them fossil fuels because they were made 100 million years ago. Our supplies are running out because we burn them faster than they are being made.

  22. It’s Not All Bad News There are many other sources of energy that we can use. These are called renewable fuels because we can use them again and again and again …. wind turbine solar panel hydro-electricity

  23. It’s Not All Bad News In a wind turbine kinetic (movement) energy is changed to electrical energy. In a solar cell light energy is changed to electrical energy. In a hydro-electric scheme gravitational energy is changed into kinetic (movement) energy, which is then changed to electrical energy.
