  1. GRADE 11 PEER RESPONSE • (if you need crayons, try the cabinets above the counter…maybe the second or third one from the left) • In yellow highlight 3-5 words/phrases that you just really like. Make a note in the margin about why. • 2. In red circle 3-5 words/phrases that you find unsatisfying. • Make a note in the margin about why. • In green box 2-3 words/phrases that make the writer • appear “likable.” Make a note in the margin about why. • 4. In purple underline the single most effective example of • “vividness” (consider imagery, metaphor, simile, etc.). • Make a note in the margin about why.

  2. 5. In orange put a squiggle line under something that seems to indicate a stylistic risk on the writer’s part (whether it’s word choice, a fragment, humor, etc.) Make a note in the margin about what makes it (in)effective.

  3. 1984 discussion extension Is O’Brien a villain? If so, why does Winston feel so connected to him? Did you consider the RHETORIC of O’Brien’s arguments to Winston during re-education? How did you react to the Julia/Winston reunion? Was there something you would have liked to see instead? How do you perceive Winston at the end? His life? His existence? His worth as a human being? Obama has made statements AGAINST torture (like in Gitmo). The film Zero Dark Thirty garnered much attention, esp. in considering the use of torture in the War on Terror. Should it be permitted? Or is it the sign of a barbaric society? Did you think about your own Room 101? Would you crack under pressure? Does that make you “bad”? “Weak”?
