  2. So…what is the Scientific Method? • Please take a few minutes to discuss with your learning club. • Be prepared to share out.

  3. The Scientific Method… a series of steps, that scientists use in order to understand the world around them.

  4. The Scientific Method includes: Making Observations Developing a Hypothesis Designing an Experiment Collecting Data Drawing Conclusions

  5. Observing what’s around you is an important part of the Scientific Method. In fact, its where you should begin, because observations cause you to “wonder why” and ask questions. 1.) MAKING OBSERVATIONS

  6. After making your observations…make a hypothesis based on what you know. Hypothesis:A testable, temporary prediction about how a scientific investigation or experiment will turn out. 2.) DEVELOP A HYPOTHESIS

  7. Experimentation lets you test the hypothesis you made.Experiment:A scientific test to try out a theory or see the effect of something. 3.) DESIGN AN EXPERIMENT

  8. When conducting an experiment or investigation, identify variables to be controlled. For example, using same size containers, handling/touching experiments and planning time/location.Variables:Things that can change and affect the outcomes of an experiment. PLANNING THE EXPERIMENT

  9. Recording your data from your experiment is very important too. By writing down each step of your experiment and collecting data…you’re able to analyze the results.Analyze:To examine in detail, in order to discover meaning. 4.) COLLECTING DATA

  10. After analyzing your data and summarizing your results, your experiment is done. This allows you to draw a conclusion based on your experiment.Conclusion:The decision or realization, based on the facts you have. 5.) DRAWING CONCLUSIONS

  11. scientific method example Making an observation:When given a choice, do ants prefer to eat grapes or celery? Hypothesis:Ants will prefer to eat a grape, because its sweet. Experiment: In an ant farm, remove other food sources. Next, place a small piece of grape and celery near each other. Make sure the pieces are of similar size. Data: “April 22nd at 11:58 a.m.: Two ants investigating each food source, but have climbed on top of the grape.” “April 22nd at 12:00 p.m.: 3 ants have avoided the celery, and is staying near the grape. One of the ants is covering the grape with sand.” “At 12:05 p.m., the celery remains untouched, as 2 more ants join the others in surrounding the grape.” Conclusion: Even though, both are considered food sources for an ant, ants prefer the taste of a sweet grape versus a piece of celery.

  12. In the end… The Scientific Method allows you to learn more information about the world.
