The Athletic Center has evolved from a mere gym into a versatile facility that fosters community and wellness. From its multipurpose room accommodating dance, Pilates, and fitness classes to the carefully designed courts for basketball and volleyball, every aspect promotes activity and engagement. Innovative ventilation systems enhance comfort, while strategic design offers outdoor recreational spaces for students. This presentation by Kevin Hart, Norm Colb, and Susan Ford Dorsey highlights the importance of thoughtful design in enhancing student and community well-being.

More Than a Building Using the design process to promote long-term thinking
What began as a “gym” evolved and grew in to the Athletic Center
…for dance, stretching, pilates, yoga, and adult fitness classes.
…the Wellness Center Hall, where trainers can see what’s happening on the courts.
…from the Hall of Fame, where a trophy case is visible from inside and outside.
Atherton height limit = 34 feet warm air stratifies Ventilation air is cooled by the foundation walls, and introduced through the bleacher seats The town’s height limit forced the gym below grade, improving natural cooling, enabling us to limit air conditioning to a very few rooms.
NEIGHBORS NEIGHBORS NEIGHBORS The building was shaped to provide the Middle School with a new outdoor recreation space.
