  1. Assessment of environmental estrogens on commercial species of fish health and their habitat in mariculture areas in southern Fujian, China and XXXX, USA Yusheng ZHANG Third Institute of Oceanography State Oceanic Administration, China June 13, 2011

  2. Outline 1. Background 2. Objective 3. Research Content 4. Annual Work Plan 5. Expected Results

  3. 1. Background

  4. EEs • Endocrine disruptors (EDs) are a group of structurally diverse compounds that may adversely affect the health of humans, wildlife, or their progenies by interaction with the endocrine system. • EDs e.g. EEs (environmental estrogens) or EDCs (endocrine disrupting compounds).

  5. Where are EEs from? (1) Air source: waste burning; industrial leakage; building material and furniture volatile commodity; (2) Water source: industrial waste water, sewage, rainwater etc; (3) Food source: contaminated food with pesticides, food additives, preservatives etc; (4) soil source :industrial and agricultural activities.

  6. Major abnormal function of EEs animal reproductive organs, reproductive function and reproductive behavior, metabolic disorders etc.

  7. How many kinds of EEs? (1) .

  8. How many kinds of EEs? (2) • about 70 kinds: several heavy metals Cd, Pb, Hg etc; 67 organic compounds including 44 pesticides; some other dyes, fragrants, paints, detergents, surfactants, plastic product additives, pharmaceuticals, food additives, animal and plant hormones

  9. EEs action mechanism EEs→Receptor → EEs-R complex →DNA (VTG gene)→mRNA → protein (VTG) EEs: persistent, accumulating→ great number of VTG →abnormal physiological function!!

  10. Paradigm for the fate of Organics in Aqueous systems(from Dan Schlenk)

  11. Potential Spatial and TemporalImpacts of Environmental Stressors

  12. 2. Objective More and more attention has been paid to the effects of environmental estrogens on fishery resources health. Fish: top predator; Food safety. • Fish biomarkers will be studied and applied to understand and assess the effects of environmental estrogens on commercial species of fish health and their habitat in mariculture areas in southern Fujian, P. R. China and XXX, California, USA. • Moreover, a strategy will be suggested to prevent and control the effects of environmental estrogen contamination/pollution on commercial species of fish in mariculture area for local governmental department concerned.

  23. 3. Research Content Ⅰ • The following contents are included in the present study: 1). To select a proper mariculture area and some commercial species of fish from the mariculture area from each country for cooperative study, respectively; 2). To study and establish marine fish biomarkers, such as VGT and CYP1A western blot and ELISA, “comet ” assay etc.

  24. Research Content Ⅱ 3). To apply fish biomarkers for monitoring effects of EES on commercial species of fish health in the mariculture area combing chemical analysis of major EES in the area; 4). To assess the effects of environmental estrogens on commercial species of fish health and their habitat using fish VGT, CYP1A, E2、T and “comet” assay etc as biomarkers and combining the chemical analysis; 5). To suggest a strategy for preventing and controlling the effects of environmental estrogen contamination/pollution on commercial species of fish in mariculture area for local governmental department concerned.

  25. 4. Annual Work Plan • 1).July, 2011 ~ December, 2011 To work out the proposal for cooperative study on effects and assessment of environmental estrogens on commercial species of fish health and their habitat in the mariculture areas in southern Fujian, P.
