This chapter explores the early European exploration of the New World, beginning with Christopher Columbus in 1492, who, while seeking the Indies, instead opened the door for Western colonization. It details the brutal conquests by Spanish conquistadores of indigenous civilizations like the Aztec and Inca, as well as expeditions led by figures such as Alvarez de Pineda, Cabeza de Vaca, and Francisco Coronado in Texas. Additionally, it covers La Salle’s French challenge to Spanish claims in the region and the lasting effects of these explorations on both native populations and European interests in North America.
