Allies Win the War • Russian Revolution erupts March 1917 • Fuel & food shortages • Czar Nicholas steps down • Provisional Gov’t takes over—pledges to stay in war • 5.5 million Russian deaths—army refuses to continue. • Provisional Gov’t overthrown by communist group—led by Vladimir Lenin. • Russia & Germany sign Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, March 3, 1918. • All German troops are moved to Western Front

Allies Win the War--Central Powers Collapse • March 1918 2nd battle of the Marne • German victory looked possible. • 140,000 fresh U.S troops attack Germans; 2 million more Allied troops arrive. • Ottomans surrender—facing revolutions • Italy (Allies) crushing Austria-Hungary • German publics revolt against Kaiser Wilhelm II • Forced to stepped down & flee • Germany declares itself a republic • Signs armistice agreement • WWI ends November 11, 1918

A Flawed Peace • Paris Peace Conference began January 1919 • Conference determined by four people: Punish Germany! -Germany pays Reparations -Weaken German army -Independence in German/Austrian areas Wants a lasting peace! -Fourteen Points -Independence for some colonies -League of Nations Woodrow Wilson - USA Lloyd George – Great Britain Get Revenge! -Blame Germany for war -Take back territory -Make them pay for war -Give independence to areas controlled by Central Powers Get Anything! -Get land from the breakup of Austria-Hungary Vittorio Orlando - Italy Georges Clemenceau - France

  5. Not all countries that participated in the war were invited to Paris… Ottoman Empire German Republic Austria-Hungary Why? They lost! Why? Country to be split Why? Will also be broken up – British want Middle East oil Colonies seeking Independence Lenin & Russia Nationalist like Ho Chi Minh of French Indochina were asked to leave! Why? Don’t like communists!
