  1. All About Toroidal Inductors And Common Mode Chokes – MiracleElectronics Toroidal inductors are insulated coils that are wire wound on a ring-shaped core made of powdered iron, ferrite, or any such material. The advantage of the ring shape is that due to its symmetry, the amount of magnetic flux that escapes outside the core is low, thus making it more efficient by radiating lesser electromagnetic interference. Toroidal inductorshave more inductance per turn, and carry more current as compared to solenoids with a core of the similar material and size. This is why these inductors are used at low frequencies where large inductances arerequired. Working of ToroidalInductors The current that passes through the toroidal inductor produces a magnetic field around it; the strength depending upon the value of current. The flux of this magnetic field is the number of concentric circles perpendicular to the direction of the flowing current. These flux lines form complete loops around the coil. Ifthe

  2. current flowing is altered, the magnetic flux also alters at the same rate that links to the coil, thus inducing electromotive force within, which is in opposite to the applied voltage across thecoil. Applications of ToroidalInductors A large variety of industries use toroidal inductors in various devices. These include healthcare, telecommunications, aerospace, nuclear fields, etc. the various applications include electronic brakes, electronic clutches, musical instruments, refrigerators, air conditioners, medical devices, industrial controls, amplifiers, switching regulators, and powersupplies. Types of ToroidalInductors Toroidal inductors are categorized into various types depending upon various factors like nominal inductance, DC resistance, case size, current rating, tolerance, and packaging type. The nominal inductance of toroidal inductors range between 10 µH and 920 µH, with the most common measurements being 25 µH, 28 µH, 50 µH, 51 µH, 75 µH and 100 µH. the most common DC resistance measurements for such inductors range in 5 mΩ, 19 mΩ, 20 mΩ, 22 mΩ, 50 mΩ, 55 mΩ and 550 mΩ. Based on all these measurement and features, the most commonly used types of toroidal inductorsinclude standard, high temperature, low loss, current sensing, couples, vertical, SMD high current, and SMD power toroidalinductors. Common ModeChokes Common mode chokes are generally used to filter and reduce unwanted electromagnetic interference, without affecting the signal; this property being very useful to filter power lines and protect electronic equipment. These common mode chokes have two coils wound around a single core. The most common types of common mode chokes seen include vertical common mode chokes with base, vertical encased core common mode chokes, vertical encapsulated core common mode chokes, SMD horizontal common mode chokes, and SMD common mode chokes withcase.

  3. To summarize, we can say that both toroidal inductors and common mode chokes are used for maintaining signal control. However, when it blocks higher frequencies, an inductor can be called a choke.
