La Bandera • The Puerto Rican flag was designed after the Cuban flag with the colors inverted as a sign of solidarity with Cuba. • Red stripes symbolize the 'blood' of brave warriors • White stripes symbolize victory, liberty and independence. • Blue triangle represents both the three sides of government and the blue waters of the ocean • White star symbolizes the island-country of Puerto Rico

Festivales: El Carnaval en Ponce, Puerto Rico • A festival that has been held for over 200 years, it's the epitome of all things boricua, and an annual testament to Puerto Ricans' capacity for whimsy and revelry. • The celebration takes place in February, in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. • The vejigantes are, in a word, demons. More to the point, the vejigante is a figure straight out of a centuries-old folklore that blends African, Spanish, and Caribbean cultures.

Las Parrandas • Christmas caroling Puerto Rican style. • Friends gather late in the evening to go from one house to the next singing traditional songs. • The parranderos must surprise the unsuspecting friends and wake them with their music. • At each house they stop for a while and party, then they go to the next house. • At each stop the owners of the house join the parranda and it grows in numbers during the evening oftentimes going until dawn.

  20. Independencia • Puerto Rico came under United States rule on December 10, 1898 • Puerto Ricans have been US citizens since 1917. • In July 1950, the US Congress enacted Public Law 600. It provided that existing laws which defined the political, economic, and fiscal relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States should remain in full force. It also authorized Puerto Rico to draft and approve its own Constitution, which took effect on July 25, 1952. • Puerto Rico’s relationship with the US is referred to as commonwealth status.

  22. Timbaleros • Timbaleros are people that play timbales, which are typical salsa drums that are popular in tropical music. • Common types of music that use timbales are plena, bomba, salsa y folkloric music.
