Bell and Beyond Partners Bloomington Department of Parks and Recreation Healthy Hearts program - cardiovascular fitness and nutrition WonderLab Interactive science-based IST – Information Systems Technology "Technology Literacy for Better Living" in an attempt to bridge the digital divide between low-income or single-parent homes, and more affluent families, in access to the internet and other technology productivity tools.

BELL GOALS • Fun learning environment for kids • Positive attitude towards technology • Confidence in using technology • Purpose of specific technologies • Engaging • hands-on, project-based • Ownership through choice • Real world problems • Parent and teacher involvement • Ownership through problem based learning • Increase teacher to student ratio with preservice teacher volunteers

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING • Students choose their own topic of interest to work on throughout the 5 week period • Students with the same or similar topics are encouraged to work together, preferably on their individual projects • Instructors introduce a new technology and guide students in how that technology can be used to help with their problem • Students create a thematic portfolio of their projects to share with their teachers, parents, and friends

IDEAS FOR THE STUDENTS • Taking care of a new pet • Designing your own video game • Planning a day trip to somewhere fun • Writing and directing your own movie • Helping the poor • community housing • soup kitchen • Global issues • Endangered species • Global Warming • Building a tree house or fort

  10. Why Volunteer! Increase teacher to student ratio Role models for kids that could use them Work with children in a low risk environment Get experience in the classroom early on Exposure to different ages in an academic setting Chance to network with schools in the community Extra credit anybody??? Maybe you will like it enough to return Maybe you will like it enough to design your own technology lesson!
