  1. What is transboundary pollution?

  2. Transboundary pollution is damage to the environment that is caused by harmful substances that starts in one country and then spreads to other countries.

  3. There are two kinds of pollution. Name and explain each.

  4. Accidental pollution occurs as a result of an accident or human error.General pollution is caused by everyday activities such as burning coal to make electricity.

  5. What is acid rain and how is it harmful to the environment?

  6. Acid rain is caused by polluted air from burning coal. The polluted air turns the rain slightly acid, like vinegar. Acid rain can harm buildings, plants and animals.

  7. How can transboundary pollution spread?

  8. Transboundary pollution can spread by the wind and by water currents.

  9. The explosion at Chernobyl released what chemical into the air?

  10. The explosion at Chernobyl released nuclear radiation into the air. This explosion is an example of which types of pollution?Accidental or general?

  11. The explosion at Chernobyl is an example of accidental pollution because it was caused by humanerror.

  12. What area in Europe is considered the “Black Triangle”?

  13. The “Black Triangle” consists of Germany, Poland, and Czech Republic.Explain why this area is called the “Black Triangle”.

  14. The Black Triangle has many factories and power plants that burn lignite, a soft brown coal, for fuel. Soot from the burning coal blackens the air in this area. The chemicals from the lignite create acid rain.

  15. True or False? Acid rain can damage monuments. Acid rain can cause fish to die. Acid rain can spread disease. Acid rain can weaken trees.

  16. True or False? Acid rain can damage monuments. True Acid rain can cause fish to die. True Acid rain can spread disease. False Acid rain can weaken trees. True

  17. Countries in Europe are trying to reduce acid rain in many ways. • Explain some approaches…..

  18. Europe is trying to reduce acid rain in many ways. • Reward companies reduce pollution…..by paying less taxes. • Promote new technology that result in less pollution…. like smokestake scrubbers. • Reduce the use of coal use as fuel…alternative energy sources like wind power or hydroelectric power.

  19. What was the cause of the Tisza-Danube cyanide spill?

  20. The Tisza-Danube cyanide spill took place due to a dam bursting that was filled with cyanide. The cyanide traveled through the river system with toxic waste.
