  3. 1. Significance of Asian University Cooperation Background situation: 1. Fast development of globalization 2. Continuous increase of regional exchanges 3. Asia with the largest area and population, facing many new challenges and problems 4. Great interest in Asian economic development and its higher education 5. Necessary to further strengthen regional cooperation

  4. 1. Significance of Asian University Cooperation Important theme for this symposium: Regional & Interregional Cooperation of Universities 1. Overemphasized the cooperation with America and Europe, 2. Under-emphasized the regional cooperation. The purpose of this symposium: 1. Understand better the importance of regional cooperation 2. Get more support from governments and industries 3. Maintain and further develop cooperation

  5. 1. Significance of Asian University Cooperation Example of Bologna Process Plan: 1. To integrate the education resources in Europe 2. To remove the obstacle in the process of student mobility 3. To establish the common framework for European higher education 4. To make European higher education more compatible and comparable, more competitive and more attractive for Europeans and for students and scholars from other continents

The identity of regional cooperation should be established by Asian universities and more attention and support from the governments and society are required. 2. A wider platform for Asian universities should be established for more exchanges 3. Purpose of regional university cooperation to meet the need of this region should be verified, and effective steps are needed.

  9. 2. Tsinghua’s Vision for Regional Cooperation 1) It is an inseparable part of Tsinghai’s whole international cooperation program, and regarded as one of the important conditions for building a world-class university.Therefore, the University must develop both internationally and regionally.

  10. 2. Tsinghua’s Vision for Regional Cooperation 2) It is one of the important approaches for undergraduate and graduate education Cultivate the students’ ability to get better understanding of the world, widen their global vision, expand the exposure to foreign cultures

Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities Tsinghua University has the following programs for regional cooperation. 1) Trilateral or Multilateral Collaboration Programs Example: an agreement for trilateral collaboration in engineering was signed by the University of Tokyo, Seoul National University and Tsinghua University Multilateral collaboration programs refer to the student exchanges under the framework of AEARU (Association of East Asia Research Universities), and ASPIRE League (Asian Science and Technology Pioneering Institutes of Research and Education).

Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities 2) Student Exchange Programs In 2010, the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Nagoya University, Seoul National University received 15 Tsinghua undergraduate students, and at the same time Tsinghua received 14 undergraduates from partner universities from Japan and Korea.

  18. 3. Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities 3) Joint Degree Programs Tsinghua University has a double degree program and joint program for graduates With Tokyo Institute of Technology.

  19. 3. Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities 4) Summer Programs In 2010, about 40 Tsinghua students were sent to Japan and Korea for summer programs. For example, 4 Tsinghua students were accepted by Pohang University for lab internship, 9 graduates by Nagoya University for a short-term exchange program lab, and so on.

Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities 5) China Scholarship Council Project: This project is sponsored by China Scholarship Council with the aim for sending 5000 graduates abroad for either Ph.D degree or joint training programs. In 2010, 15 Tsinghua graduates were sent to Japan and Korea under CSC program.

  21. 3. Various Cooperation between Tsinghua and Asian Universities 6) University Week and University Day: In 2008, the University of Tokyo successfully held Tsinghua-Todai Week in Tsinghua. More than 200 professors and students from the University of Tokyo had wide academic exchanges with their counterparts from Tsinghua University. In 2010 about 150 professors and Ph.D students from Tsinghua University joined the Tsinghua Week at the University of Tokyo.

  22. 4. Satisfactions & Problems Through these regional programs, 1) The students from different countries have got better understanding of each other and built up friendly relations. 2) Professors and scholars have further enhanced their academic links.

Satisfactions & Problems 3) They have promoted the multi-cultural campus because there are more foreign students and professors in each other’s university. 4) They have push ahead the development of a world-class university, and further promoted the cooperative relations among regional universities.

  24. 4. Satisfactions & Problems Advantages for regional university cooperation 1) Easy to communicate with each other 2) Convenient transportation 3) Low cost for cooperation and exchange 4) Time-saving in travel 5) More common interests in regional issues

Satisfactions & Problems Some problems for regional university cooperation 1) As the instruction language in Asian universities is their native language, it has become a main obstacle for student mobility. 2) Many Asian students are inclined to pursue their study in American or European universities, and are rather reluctant to study in regional universities.

Suggestions for Further Asian University Cooperation 1) Make joint efforts to obtain more attention and support from the governments, education departments, enterprises, industries and society for the regional university cooperation 2) Make better use of the regional university associations such as AEARU (Association of East Asia Research Universities), ASPIRE League (Asian Science and Technology Pioneering Institutes of Research and Education) and Association of South-east Universities.

Suggestions for Further Asian University Cooperation 3) Asian universities should further improve the quality and efficiency of regional university cooperation and make better and full use of the existing agreements among them. The possibility of convergent higher education system in Asian can be carefully explored. 4) Asian universities should make better use of the various education programs initiated by Asian countries.

  28. 5. Suggestions for Further Asian University Cooperation 5) We should make full use of regional resources for the purpose of higher education. Asian universities have their own priorities and advantages.
