Operational Oceanography for Overseas Territories: Cyclone Prediction in the Indian Ocean

The O3MaR research project, a collaborative effort between Mercator Ocean and CNRM (Météo-France), focuses on operational oceanography for overseas territories, specifically Réunion. Beginning in March 2012, this project includes an 18-month postdoctoral study on ocean-atmosphere coupled cyclone prediction in the Indian Ocean. Utilizing the AROME AGCM (few km) coupled with the NEMO (1/36°) OGCM, and initialized by Mercator analyses (1/12°), the project explores cyclone trajectory/intensity forecasts and ocean state analysis through advanced coupling methods and sensitivity studies.

Samson) • AROME AGCM (few km) coupled to NEMO 1/36° OGCM initialized by Mercator analyses (1/12°) with a relocation capability • Preliminary tests with AROME coupled to 1D ML model • coupling with waves, parameterization of the sea spray • sensitivity studies (horizontal resolution, coupling), forecasts of cyclone trajectory / intensity, ocean state analysis and forecast
