  5. Cobalt • Major Ideas • Symbol: Co • Color: Gray • Classification: Metallic • Found most: • Glass • Objects for beauty • Earliest know use: 1735

  6. Nickel • Major Ideas • Symbol: Ni • Color: Gray • Classification: Metallic • Found most: • Makes materials stronger • Batteries (not so much anymore…) • Earliest know use: 1751

  8. Magnetism • Three major ideas: • An invisible forced caused by certain solids and fluids • Magnets= have north and south poles that can attract each other • Neither of the Earth’s magnetic poles actually at the geographic poles

  14. Electron • Three major ideas: • Fundamental particle found orbiting an atom’s nucleus • “always” as many electrons as protons in an atom • A feather-light tyke that packs a tremendous punch

  15. Electron • b) Charge is: negative • c) I normally zip around outer regions of an atom • d) I always return and I can’t help it- with a negative charge equal to a proton’s positive charge. I am constantly drawn toward the nucleus. • e) Date of discovery: 1897

  16. Proton • Three major ideas: • Subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom • “loves” to be at the center of things • NOT a fundamental particle- made of quarks

  18. Neutron • Three major ideas: • This fat fellow is the last piece of the atomic puzzle • Only affected by the strong force and gravity • Made up of quarks and is the key to nuclear chain reactions
