Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. • April 4, 1968 • King was in Memphis to speak and support a strike by African American Sanitation workers. • On April 3, he gave his last speech, “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” • King was staying in room 306 of the Lorraine Motel. While on the balcony he was shot by James Earl Ray.

  2. Impact of Assassination • Many civil rights activists will become disillusioned with nonviolent approach to reform • Riots will happen in over 110 American cities over the next week, including Washington DC • A national day of mourning is called for by president Johnson.
