  2. Areas of learning… • The foundation stage curriculum is split into six areas of learning… • Personal, social and emotional development • Communication, language and literacy • Mathematical development • Knowledge and understanding of the world • Creative Development • Physical Development

  3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Encourages children to be independent and to interact with other children and adults. • Helps children to become confident, safe, secure and ready to learn from new experiences.

  4. Communication, Language and Literacy • Encourages children to develop conversational skills. • Will help children to develop listening and concentration skills. • Enables children to begin to hear sounds in words and to link these sounds to letters. • Encourages children to develop pencil control and to begin to make marks on paper. • Will help children to learn to read individual words and eventually, simple stories independently.

Mathematical Development • Helps children to count up to ten and beyond. • Encourages them to use mathematical words such as greater, smaller, heavier, lighter, more, less etc • Develops skills in comparing and sorting objects. • Supports children’s understanding of shape and size including 2D and 3D shapes.

  6. Knowledge and understanding of the world • Forms a foundation for later work in science, history, geography, design and technology, and ICT. • Helps them to make sense of the world at their level.

  7. Physical Development • Improves skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement. • Introduces them to the positive benefits of being active and healthy.

  8. Creative Development • Encourages an enjoyment of music. • Provides opportunities for imaginative play. • Helps engender confidence in painting, drawing and other areas of art.

  10. In Reception children have snack time. Fresh fruit and vegetables are provided daily by the school, however if you wish for your child to have milk we ask for a contribution of £1 per week. It is often better if this is all paid in one go at the beginning of the term. We do P.E twice a week and so it is important that your child has a named P.E kit that is left in school. Please provide your children with both trousers and shorts so that they are prepared for any out door lessons. If you wish to stay with your child on their first day you can come into the classroom and carry out an activity with your child until you feel they are settled.
