Perspectives on SciDAC Alan J. Laub
SciDAC _is_ Changing Culture • scientists are realizing that they can do research involving high-end computing and simulation better (or not previously possible) if they have mathematicians and computer/computational scientists on their team • the costs, including overcoming language and culture barriers, are not trivial but the investment is sound and paying dividends • many success stories to date
Why Does SciDAC Work? • original plan was brilliantly conceived and well executed • SciDAC researchers and teams have embraced the concept • communication across programs at SC • the Labs play a critical unifying role • the ISICs are instrumental in effecting the necessary “technology transfer”
The Budget Climate • no global warming effect yet, even in SC • interesting multi-scale phenomena • a “business case” could be made • HECRTF status
The Future of SciDAC • the SciDAC concept must appeal to applications programs as a compelling way to better enable scientific discovery • the concept is scalable within SC and across agencies and international boundaries • still missing a hardware component (HECRTF) • SciDAC can help solidify CSE as an important endeavor in academia
