  1. Mechanical and Materials Engineering Important information for week one

Machine shop safety SESSIONS • All students wishing to work in the EB 145 Machine shop must complete Part One and Part Two of the Machine Shop Safety sessions. • Students will not be able to log hours in the Machine Shop without first finishing the sessions. • To sign up for the Machine Shop Safety Sessions go the MME website- http://www.pdx.edu/mme/safety-class-registration • Once you have signed up to be invited to the sessions, you will be sent an email to you pdx.edu account with further information on scheduling you session

  3. MACHINE SHOP SAFETY SESSIONS • PART ONE: Each session limited to 20 students • Schedule TBD • PART TWO: choose one, each session limited to 5 students • Schedule TBD

  4. Pathways program • Application process will begin Winter Term. • Students must apply by the third term of their junior year • End of spring 1st year for most/Fall of 2nd year for MECOP students • Please see the Bachelor’s + Master’s Pathway webpage on the MME website for more details- www.pdx.edu/mme/bachelors-masters-pathway

  5. Transfer students • All transfer students, or PSU students with any transferable credits, must send their official transcripts to Portland State University Admissions Office • This includes summer classes, online classes, etc. • High school transcripts may need to be sent to Portland State to show that you have satisfied the foreign language requirement • First year advising appointment required by end of first year.

  6. Pdx.edu email • PLEASE always use your pdx.edu email when corresponding with faculty or staff. • It is the only official form of communication between you and the MME faculty and staff • Frequently check your pdx.edu email for updates, events, and any MME/PSU faculty and staff communication • If needed, forward it to your used email • All admitted students added to a ME undergrad Google group • Programmatic and scheduling changes

  8. Advising comments • I heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend you …….. WRONG!!!! • Don’t believe what you hear. The truth only comes from the department. Don’t assume anything.ASK US FIRST! The Department Staff is All-Knowing - don’t doubt them

  9. Don’t expect prerequisites to be waived!

  10. New Pre-requisite Constraints • Must take ME 213/213L and ME 240/240L this academic year! • won’t be offered this coming summer • If you don’t take it, you can’t start your senior capstone next fall

  11. ME 491-493 (senior capstone) is a year sequence that only starts in the Fall.Key Classes (Don’t fail these: F = Fail, D- = pass) • ME 313 First Plan • ME 320 in Winter term • ME 322 in Spring term • ME 320 First Plan • ME 313 and ME 350 Winter • ME 314 and ME 351 in Spring term

Don’t Overload Yourself • Bluesheet (Plans: Green and Yellow) are a suggested 4 year plan. • If you’re on extended course plan, the department needs to know. • Take UD cluster courses during summer • WR327 can be taken any quarter (including summer) • Needs to be completed by the end of summer before start of Capstone.

  13. Suspension and Probation • Probation: GPA < 2.0 in a given term • Suspension: 2 consecutive terms on probation or 3 terms on probation • Required to retake 2/3 of all UD ME courses with a grade of C- or below and get C or above. • At least a year added to your studies

  14. Get Involved • Student Groups (ASME, FSAE, SWE, EWB, PSAS, MELT, etc…) • Undergraduate Research and Mentoring Program (URMP) • paid position in faculty research lab • Internships: • See Frank Goovaerts in Student Services • Attend his career workshops (resumes, interviews, etc.)
