  5. Mission Level Architecture • Data volume and data compression studies - Structured noise from the detectors renders the data poorly compressible with the current compression algorithm • Updated Science Operations - Design Reference Mission for data volume analysis; results justified requirement for 458 gbits/day • Participated in evaluation of possible solutions • Resolution has been achieved through an increased number of contacts • Studying a high compression software solution that will be discussed in a splinter session at 09:00 on Friday (Ballroom) • Moment of Inertia - high inertia increases slew times and decreases efficiency • Participated in review of various slew algorithms which use current momentum magnitude or state and various approximations of RWA capacity to select or compute slew parameters • Ensured consideration of operations efficiency • Momentum Management - a challenging problem now resolved and incorporated into requirements and design • Incorporated new requirements into the S&OC, including On-board Scripts requirements for autonomous momentum management • Revision C of the Mission Operations Concept Document

S&OC Systems Engineering • Flight Operations Subsystem • Completed all Flight Operations System component requirements walkthroughs. • Telemetry Analysis and Trending System (TATS) and the Data Warehouse Handler (DWH) – Mar 25. • FOS Operations Concept presentation – Mar 25 • FOS Planning System (FPS), Monitoring and Notification Executive (MANE), Batch Telemetry System (BTS), and Recorded Data handler (RDH) – Dec 8-9 • Finishing the FOS Requirements Document. • Data Management System • Coordinated joint DMS work between HST and JWST on porting STDADS to Linux enabling an early start on the demo version of the JWST I&T Data Archive. See splinter session - Friday at 9:00 • Continued work on the DMS Operations Concept.

Proposal and Planning Subsystem • Conducted the first of three PPS System Design Reviews on March 15, 2009 • Issued first version of the PPS Design Document. • PPS Hardware • Conducted several reviews of PPS development, I&T, & OPS hardware including JWST and HST review of I&T/OPS Common Hardware. • Completed set up of the development environment and began work on the I&T environment. • Moving Targets • Began developing moving target requirements including the moving target chapter of the proposal instructions.

  8. Proposal and Planning Subsystem • Level 5 Requirements - Proposal Instructions • 19 chapters and 5 appendices in various stages of review = 211 pages

  9. Proposal and Planning Subsystem • Astronomers Proposal Tools • Released an alpha version (Build 1) of the initial set of MIRI & NIRCam templates in Nov, 2008. APT 17.4 entered component testing in February 2009 and has been released. • The HST version 17.4 of APT contains the initial JWST MIRI and NIRCam templates. • NIRSpec and TFI template development continues. These will be incorporated in version 17.5 of APT that should be released in September.

Proposal and Planning Subsystem • PPS Constraint Generator • Continued integrating the JWST constraint library Build 1, and Guide Stars Build 1, into the PCG code. • JWST Constraint Library • Completed Science Instrument Aperture Coordinate conversions, Phase constraint, Roll to Time and Time to Roll conversions, Link-set Propagator integration • Started study of Signal to Noise constraint • Guide Stars Catalog • Continued to augment Guide Star Catalog II with the 2MASS objects • Visit Scheduling System • Design of the command line interface has begun • Development of the VSS architecture has begun • Design of the VSS to PPS component interfaces continued as did design of the VSS to S&OC subsystems interfaces

Other Commanding Highlights • Observation Plan Executive (OPE): • Updated level 5 requirements and design • Addressed HGA management, momentum management, visit exit, and fault management • OSS Certification: • Started using the Certification Lab for MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam unit testing • Moving Targets: • Drafted new OSS level 4 requirements • Observation Plan Generation System (OPGS): • Completed High Level Design • Created level 5 requirements and Implemented code for: • OPGS user interface parameter verification, Observation Plan Segment file and Visit file generation from a Short Term Schedule for the MIRI templates. Can execute visit end to end! • Supported Science Instrument Proposal Template definitions • Delivered APT template related requirements to developers • Produced OPGS build schedule with APT & VSS dependencies

ISIM Flight Software Support • ISIM Flight Software: • Coordinated the ISIM Test (IC10) PRD and ISIM ETU (IC10.3) PRD deliveries from ISIM and SI teams • Participated in ISIM fsw IC10/11 test plan, code, and test result reviews • Supported Data Acquisition Flight Software Fault Management requirements definition • IGSS ISIM Commanding Tools: • Delivered upgrade to ADExecute and RTSBuild tool

WFS&C Software Subsystem • Conducted a very successful PDA with Ball in January - a simultaneous PDA of two Ball components (WAS, MCS) with one STScI component (WEx). • Collaborating very effectively with Ball on WSS design • Agreed on the details for most of the WSS IRCD control section • Agreed on PRD content for the Mirror Calibration Data for the Mirror Control Software • Agreed on overall plan for Wavefront Analysis Software PRD content • Developed plan for updating and managing WSS-specific PRD content • Delivered a draft of the WSS V&V plan • Supported the Wavefront Algorithms Delta review • Reviewed Multi-Instrument, Multi-Field Alignment additions to the Wavefront Algorithms • No impact on the WEx Software • Requires updates to other SOC subsystems and additions to WSS V&V

WFS&C Software Subsystem • Working with Ball and the STScI Telescope Team on WFS&C Operations • Reviewed Proposal and Planning systems concepts and plans for WFS&C • Discussed plans for NIRCam calibration and data formats • Discussed the limits of hexapod movement with an impaired or failed actuator (procedures, poses) • Explored approaches to modeling the effect of actuator failure on ability to improve PSF Simulated data with +4 waves weak defocus lensleft: individual read (w/ cosmic rays + bad pixels)right: count rate image (cosmic-ray corrected,but bad pixels remain)

PRD Management Office Web Site • New PRD Management Office web site announced March 5 • This site utilizes CR System authentication and allows timely updates (without a software change as with the CR System) • Site provides PRD schedule and other PRD documents, PRD Utilities and Tools, CCB materials, Working Group minutes and links for the most used CR System pages

  19. New PRD Verification Report • Organized by data type, each expandable & collapsible • Summary and info link provided for each check • Errors (red) and warnings (yellow) indicated by color and expanded by default • This report will be deployed via the PRDMO web site for teams to use locally

Project Reference Database Software has truly reached a maintenance stage • PRDS 3.7 – for Change Request System and PRD Toolkit • Delivered Nov. 7 and deployed to CR System Nov. 12 • Resolved critical performance issue with certification report • PRDS 3.8 – for Change Request System and PRD Toolkit • Delivered Feb. 27 and deployed to CR System Mar. 4 • Provided Automated Auditing Report, a CR Verification State, Missing Children XREF Report, and new login page for CR System as well as Java conversion of macros and JWST logo for Toolkit • PRDS team completed review of outstanding PRs • Incorporated this into content & schedule for software delivery in June, a maintenance update for the toolkit and CR System • Planning for fall software release, too • Software performance tests with large databases • Tests show CR System and PRD Toolkit ably handle database with 26000 data items, which exceeds size requirements by 30%

Database Releases • Initiated IITS Development PRD in December • PRDDEVIITS-D-001 initial publication March 10 • PRDDEVIITS-D-002 published March 30 for ETU testing at GSFC • With the contributions from the SI teams, the PRD has more than doubled in size since 2008 to nearly 17,000 data items • More information will be available in the 2:00 Mission Operations Working Group - Andy Groeber presenting.

Ground Segment I&T • Ground Segment Verification and Validation Planning • Prepared detailed set of verification descriptions for all requirements in the GSRD and S&OC to Institutional Systems IRCD • STScI is an active participant in JSC Test Planning (via JTAG Working Group) • Provided draft Test Information Sheets (TISs) for Ground tests at JSC • Simulators - Spent significant effort working simulator requirements: • Participated in the Observatory Test Bed (OTB) requirements development and review with NGAS (October, 2008 – March, 2009) • Prepared requirements for a software telemetry simulator, which is needed for Flight Ops Team (FOT) training

S&OC Element I&T • S&OC I&T Planning • Developed preliminary architecture diagrams for the S&OC I&T environment • S&OC Build/Release Plan being formalized with development teams • S&OC Subsystem I&T • Completed a draft of the WSS Verification Plan • Developed numerous test cases verification methods and descriptions for FOS Level 4 requirements • Overall Ground and S&OC verification status captured in chart on next page summarizes Ground and S&OC verification status

Webb Instrument Team (WIT) Input to S&OC development • Operations Development (Operations Working Groups) • Determine how instrument operations will be conducted providing input to the On-board Scripts (dithering, engineering functions activities and sub-arrays) • OWG Contacts: Chen (MIRI),Tumlinson (NIRSpec), Sahu (NIRCam), Chayer (Guider), Fullerton (TFI) • Proposal Planning System Support • Provide input to instrument templates in conjunction with the Operations Working Groups - proposal instructions • Assisted with MSA planning tool studies and simulations • GSCII: characterization of limitations and beginning improvements

WIT - Calibration • Calibration Development (Calibration Working Groups) • Collaborative effort with SI Teams, and STScI Calibration Software developers. • Outlining high level architecture requirements for science data processing. • Considering potential for (some) commonality across instruments given the similarity of the detectors • Learning software from SI teams for ground test data processing • Started devising best algorithms with SI teams • Collecting data for absolute calibration standards for JWST • Contacts: Gordon (MIRI), Beck (NIRSpec), Robberto (NIRCam), Chayer (Guider), Volk (TFI) • Held successful Calibration Summit at STScI (March 31 - April 1) • SI teams provided critical input to pipeline development at STScI • Addressed data processing steps, ground tests, science calibration, SI team software • Splinters on I&T data archives, detector data processing steps, visualization, and ITAR

Telescope Team: Optics Hardware, I&T • OTE CoC Test (ambient test GSFC/SSDIF 2011) • Test development, metrology, interferometry • Multiwave-Interferometer (MWIF) (GSFC Testbed for JSC IF) • Hardware troubleshooting, coarse alignment of parabolas, null-lens calibration mirror, co-phasing using MWIF still to start • Backplane Test (cryo test GSFC/SES 2010) • Refined IRCD for Test Facility use • OSIM Development (Optical simulator for ISIM I&T) • G. Hartig was Panel member in Design Review and has extensively participated in telecons+TIMs regarding overall design • NIRCam Development/Modeling • Hartig and Upton participated in Tiger Team to investigate WFE in NIRCam Pathfinder • Performed optical tolerancing analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations • Started analysis of ghosting with and without coatings, and WFS&C impact • Extensive communication about optics alignment and test plans

Telescope Team: WFS&C • WFS&C Algorithms • Participated in Algorithm Closure Delta-Review • Multi-Instrument Multi-Field Alignment (MIMFA) • Developed Hybrid Diversity Algorithm software at STScI • WFS&C Software Subsystem (WSS) • Involved in ongoing WSS development • Analyzed impact of failed actuators on image quality • WFS&C target star isolation requirements • Investigated how the requirements on target star isolation affect availability • Argued for looser isolation requirements (adopted in Ball change requests) • Sub-array size for in-focus WFS images may need to be increased to establish absence of faint companion stars Available target stars for WFS&C maintenanceif isolation to mag = 7 is requested out to 1 (top) or 0.5 (bottom) arcmin, respectively.

Telescope Team: Optics Modeling and Data Simulation • Linear Optical Control Model ZEMAX+MATLAB (Upton) • Report on mirror control, degrees-of-freedom, and degeneracies • Evaluated impact of mirror segment edges (Upton/Makidon) • Studied impact of imperfect mirror segment edges on image quality with telescope model in FRED software • Increased prominence of diffraction spikes unlikely to affect science • JWPSF Software (Soummer/Makidon) • Upgrading STScI JWPSF software to allow predictions for MIRI coronagraph observations • Simulated data for scripts testing (Anderson) • Created software to generate simulated data for testing of target acquisition scripts • Includes coronagraphic mask effect on PSF • Dithered Data(Anderson) • Procedure developed for possible dithered data combination by WSS • Background Light and Proposal Planning System (Kinzel, …) • Study ongoing to address extent to which PPS (and ETC) need to understand predicted S/N, and which sources must be modeled (zodiacal light, earth, moon, Galaxy ….) • Working to improve Zodiacal light model for scattered light analysis

  33. JWST Advisory Committee (JSTAC) • A JWST Advisory Committee (JSTAC) has been created to advise the STScI Director, Matt Mountain, on the optimum strategies and priorities for JWST operations. The goal is to maximize scientific productivity for the General Observer from day 1. • The JSTAC will advise on: • implementation of observing policies • prioritization of capabilities offered at launch (including archive, data analysis tools and observing modes) • readiness of the S&OC.

  37. JWST Operations Development • Work on JWST operational tools is in full swing at STScI. The look and feel of JWST will be very similar to that of HST. • The Astronomer’s Proposal Tool (APT) will be used for JWST Phase I and Phase II program submission.   38. JWST Templates Released in APT • APT 17.4 released on 4/9/09 for HST support • Includes JWST proposal support with MIRI and NIRCam templates

  39. NIRSpec Micro-shutter Array Microshutters measure 0.2 by 0.4 arcsecs, arranged on 4 grids. The array is configurable to allow spectra of ~100 distinct sources simultaneously.
