Ecstasy • nickname for 3,4- methylenedioxymethamphetamine • Also called MDMA, Adam, and STP • Stimulant and hallucinogen used to improve mood and maintain energy; often used for all-night rave dance parties • Long term use may cause damage to the brain’s ability to regulate sleep, pain, memory, and emotions. • Users claim to feel euphoric and have perceived perversions in time and space • Can be present in body for 24-48 hours • Short term symptoms: Fever, nausea, hallucinations, blurred vision, the chills, high blood pressure • Long term effects: depression, anxiety, and memory

  3. Cocaine • Benzoylmethylecgonine C17H21NO4 • Also known as crack, coke, rock, and snow. • derived from the coca plant of South America. Can be smoked, snorted, injected, or swallowed • quickly produces a powerful high with a increased energy, elevated mood, and feeling of supremacy • Also can cause irritability, paranoia, anxiety, and restlessness   • Short and long term effects: paranoia, irregular heartbeat, constriction of blood vessels leading to heart damage and stroke, damage to the brain.

Methamphetamine • C10H15N - dimethylbenzeneethanamine • Also called meth, crystal, chalk, and ice • extremely addictive stimulant drug that produces immediate and intense euphoria • increases levels of dopamine, enhancing mood and physical movement • short term effects: irritability, insomnia, confusion, anxiety, paranoia, aggressiveness • long term effects: violent and psychotic behavior, auditory hallucinations, paranoia, suicidal thoughts, and anorexia • can be used to treat ADHD and obesity in low doses

LSD • Lysergic Acid Diethylamide- found in the ergot fungus that grows on rye and other grains • it binds to and activates a specific receptor for serotonin • C20H25N30 • used in form of tablets, packets, gelatin, or absorbent paper; lasts 8-12 hours • semisynthetic psychedelic drug, well known for its psychological effects including altered thinking, visuals/ hallucinations, altered sense of time, and spiritual experiences • is not addictive but body becomes tolerant to it; higher doses=greater risk • odorless,colorless and tasteless • can cause psychosis, schizophrenia, and bad flashbacks even months after one use
