  2. Carbohydrates • Two types: • Simple • Energy source • White sugar, refined sugars, etc… • Complex • Major source of energy • Bread, pasta, rice, starches, etc… • Most foods have carbs • Helps digestion system work well

  3. Fats • Two types: • Good (unsaturated) • Provides energy • Nuts, olive oil, etc… • Bad (saturated) • Makes you gain weight • Causes heart disease and weight problems • Fast & processed foods, baked goods, etc… • Stored when needed

  4. Protein • Types: • 50,000 different types • Forms our organs, nerves, and muscles • Assembles hormones • Eat one gram per kilogram of weight • Good sources: • Beef, lamb, venison, buffalo, pork, etc…

  5. Vitamins • 5 types: • Vitamin A, B, C, D, and K • Found in: fruits, veggies, dairy, and meat • Without them some body processes couldn’t happen • Some stored in body • Some cannot be held in the body • Are organic molecules • Needed to maintain growth and activity

  6. Minerals • 7 types: • Calcium, iron, chromium, copper, iodine, selenium, zinc • Boost immune system • Helps cells, and organs do their jobs • Makes body work properly • Inorganic elements come from soil and water • Support growth and development

  7. Fibre • Twotypes: • Soluble • Lowers blood cholesterol Insoluble • lowers blood cholesterol • Helps slow down absorption of glucose • Sources: • OJ, popcorn, brown rice, muffins, grains, etc… • Prevents getting heart attacks by lowering cholesterol

  8. Water • Bodies made up 65% water • Without water difficult to lose weight • Helps your body be balanced • Without water cells can die • When dehydrated you get sick
