  1. Inversion Question Formation

  2. Question formation options • There are three different ways to ask a question in French: • Statement ? • Tu parles français? • Est-ce que + statement ? • Est-ce que tu parles français? • Inversion • Parles-tu français?

  3. Inversion Formation • To make a question using inversion: • Locate the verb of your question • Regarder • Write the verb, in the right form, followed by a hyphen • Regardez- • Locate the subject of your question • Vous • Write the subject after the hyphen • Regardez-vous

  4. Practice • Write these questions in French using inversion: • Do you all like math? • Aimez-vous les maths? • Do you sing? • Chantes-tu? • Do we study? • Etudions-nous?

  5. Inversion Annoyances • If you want to use a name in your question, it has to come before the verb. • Valérie est-elle en classe? • Simone et Paulette étudient-elles? • Moi et Claire sommes-nous intelligentes?

  6. Inversion Annoyances • If the subject starts with a vowel (il, elle, & on ONLY), you need to insert a t between the verb and subject to preserve the sound IF there is not already a t sound in the verb. • Parle-t-elle espagnol? • Etudie-t-il l’anglais? • Fait-il attention en classe? • There is already a t sound at the end of the verb • Joue-t-elle au foot?

  7. Inversion Annoyances • Any question words (quand, pourquoi, etc.) come at the very front of the question. • Pourquoi étudies-tu la biologie? • Quand regardent-ils la télé? • Avec qui danse-t-elle? • Combien d’argent avons-nous?

  8. Inversion Annoyances • Any extra words just go on the end of the sentence. • Fais-tu attention? • Aimez-vous parler français? • Pourquoi travaille-t-il au supermarché? • Quand écoutent-elles de la musique? • As-tu faim? • Font-ils la cuisine?
