Changes and Trends in Higher Education (Adapted from Barbara Holland, 2013) Political critique of higher education dominates the news – Obama’s score card, state and federal budgets, worth of a college degree, $$$, equity and access Rise of collaboration (within and outside of higher education) Reshaping of the faculty Concerns about access, equity, quality, completion, and re-engaging adults Student demands are changing

Campus Compact Insights Engagement can no longer just be captured in civic engagement centers (The concept of the engaged campus is growing) Focus on outcomes measurement, economic impact Attention to College Access, Success, Attainment Growing urgency of the “big questions” Partnerships matter Funding is changing

  6. Civic Engagement Practitioner Summit Where is the field of community and civic engagement headed and how can we shape its direction? World Café Conversation • A conversational tool or process. • Exploration of questions that matter. • Everyone contributes diverse perspectives. • Everyone listens together for insights, and shares collective discoveries from the conversation.

World Café Process • You’ll explore three questions; moving to a different table for each question. • You can use the paper and markers to write down ideas. • Select a Table Host for each table. • Host will take some basic notes • Build continuity between groups • We’ll follow the guidelines to the best of our ability.

  8. World Café Guidelines Enjoy your time with colleagues. Focus on what matters. Contribute your thinking. Speak your mind and heart. Listen to understand one another. Listen together for patterns and connections among your ideas and experiences. Have a good time, doodle, draw.

Question #1 How has this work changed over the past 5 years and what seems to be trending on your campus? • What are the relationships among volunteerism, service-learning, community-campus partnerships, social entrepreneurship, and political engagement on campus? • What are the challenges you face when trying to make it all fit into the larger engagement agenda?

  10. Question #2 How are civic engagement activities addressing the inequities of degree completion within higher education? • How are the changing demographics on our campuses and communities impacting our civic and community engagement strategies? • What is the role of civic and community engagement offices in in addressing college access and success activities? What strategies have you tried?

Question #3 How has the focus on career preparation impacted civic and community engagement on your campus? • Has your relationship with campus units changed as a result? • What impact has National Service had on engaging students and/or alumni? How do you see National Service fulfilling new roles in your work in the next five years?

  12. Wrap-Up • What sorts of patterns are emerging or being discussed? • Are there deeper questions coming about as a result of these conversations? If so – what are they? • What further questions do you have as a result of your conversations this morning?
